Wow wow wow wow. I want that, can you explain how it works, and what modification is needed to make it work? Also what is the cost. Thank you!

The remote for the heater has the same theoretical range as the keyfob. I can unlock my car from way inside the house. I really dont see a problem, and Volvo offered me an OEM GSM-unit when i installed the thing - i said no.

Thats good for you then. :) We all have different needs, me for example apreciates a warm car when im out fishing. Or to start the heater when im at another place. And Its cheaper than the oem remote. I will write down some info here tomorrow, got some PM:s urging me to do that. Now im on a iPhone, easier at a computer.

Ok. I will try to get down some info.

It is called Comfort Call and is made by a man called Torsten in Bremen, Germany. I dont want to write his email here, but give me a private message and I will provide it.

You will need a:
*Gas/dieselheater of course, its possible to buy used and install it yourself. Cost in Sweden around 800 dollars. On the dealership they will set you off 3000 dollars.
*AEM-unit (Accessories electronics module). Used for PDC-systems in 00-04 cars for example. And also remote steering of heaters. (If you dont have it its around 100 dollars used. Power/Can-cable should be in the car already, mine was.
*Software Volvo AEM unit (around 45 dollars)
*Software Volvo Remote start 2 (around 45 dollars)
*Comfort Call by Torsten, around 300 dollars incl. shipping.
*A GSM refill SIM-card.

There are no running costs with the comfort call if you call it to start and stop it. Small costs if you use sms, then the car will also respond with an sms saying its active.

Volvo has an OEM-system GSM system for remote start as Adrian stated (costs around 1000 dollars), but its a minicall service with a monthly fee and also a about dollar per start. The minicall network in Sweden is also on its way to fade out.

Noobkiller also asked how it works. You call your car to start it, 2 signals. To stop it, call it again until you get a confirmation tone in your phone.
You could also start it with sms.

This is by far the best modification I done to my XC70.

Hope this info helps. Ask if I missed something.

Best regards Olof

After researching ATF trans fluid for my 02 XC70, I found Wolfshead Universal Synthetic ATF at the local NAPA dealer for $3.75 per quart when bought by the case. I called the company and it meets all specs for this transmission (and most others) plus it's synthetic. I chose to flush my trans the easy, less complicated way, by just changing the fluid 3 times (driving at least 25 miles between changes). On the first change I drained exactly 4 quarts out of the trans. The trans shifted 100% better just with this one change. No more delay and no more hard shifts. It got even better after the other 2 ATF changes. My XC70 has 110k miles on it and this is my first trans fluid change.

I saw your other post(s) on this. Looking at the viscosity properties of the fluid it appears to be substantially different from every other JW3309 compatible fluid I've seen. Glad to hear it's working well though, hope it holds up!

Oh, and for your amusements - some fuel-facts from the trip:
160 km/h (~100 mph): 1,38 l/10km (17,0 MPG)
180 km/h (~112 mph): 1,61 l/10km (14,6 MPG)
200 km/h (~124 mph): 1,87 l/10km (12,6 MPG)
220 km/h (~136 mph): 2,38 l/10km (9,88 MPG)
We averaged, with an hour of eating and stopping each direction included in these numbers; 115 km/h (71 mph) and 1,50 l/10km (15,68 MPG) on the whole trip. These numbers are all from the onboard computer, we didnt make any measurements for ourselves. All we know is; the car is really REALLY thirsty.
We had a three-stop stint (gas -> drive -> gas -> drive -> gas) where we averaged 201 km/h and 1,93 l/10km

Love the look and feel of cold aluminium! :)
One of my modifications I will enjoy the most. At least everytime I put her into gear. Mmm.

Any Issues with that Steering wheel on your v70? I'm thinking of a 05' s60r steering wheel on my 01 xc70. I heard that it will fit, however somebody at the Volvo salvage yard told me the "clock springs" were not the same, therefore the SRS would be inoperative... anyone got anything on that?

Thanks,

Nothing exciting, but the first bit of work I've done in a while. Swapped out the front R half shaft. The old shaft was not a happy one.

Replaced the endlinks as well. It appears that was the source of my front end clunk. Somewhere along the line, someone swapped one endlink and not the other, as I had a mismatched set on there.

Another year, another deer. Cut corn field with about 6" stalks left, 2003 XC70 plows right thru, only problem is the stalks get hung up on the engine skid plate but it sure beats dragging a dead deer a 1/4 mile.
The Volvo 2" Hitch and Volvo Load Carrier again performed superbly.
I just can't think of a better vehicle for hunting.
After hunting season I might wash it, maybe.
I did wash the load carrier though. -Dick

In the last week the 01 XC has seen some loving after 2.5 years of daily driving and some high miles.

-timing belt
-tensioner
-water pump
-idler pulley
-front control arm bushings
-front axles
-rear wiper
-oil cap
-oil change engine
-air filter

parts on order

-4 brake calliper flex hoses
-upper engine mount
-inner tie rod ends
-a new wheel bearing "don't need it yet but want one around"

I have got all this stuff through FCP and have done my own work, it has been quite a bit of maintenance, but am keeping it well under 1000$

dealer would probably want 700 to just do the timing belt:eek:

Great car, hope it keeps rolling:)

More maintenance stuff the past couple of weeks: swapped in Mobil 1 tranny fluid, Seafoamed/swapped engine oil with Mobil 1. Had to replace the thermostat as well. Getting ready to swap rear brakes/pads with Brembo/Akebeno pads. Also swapping the rear end links.

After the transmission fluid swap, definitely noticed a change for the better. It wasn't bad before, but just seems a little less "rough" around the edges now.

In summary check you lower trans mount... It is probably bad like mine. I absolutely love the Samco hoses, they look awesome, are great quality, and I feel like boost now comes on quicker. They are very easy to install and only took me about 25 or 30 minutes to do with my buddy ewakefield...

The OBX catback... First off, the thing is dirt cheap. You honestly cannot beat under 400 bucks shipped to your door. The quality of the material and welds seems to be very good and I really liked the look of the whole system. However, they supply these BULLSHI* clamps to clamp together the exhaust. I humored them and used the clamps and are are literally useless. You might as well try to seal the exhaust with a bottle of superglue. The thing leaked like crazy, so I cranked them down as hard as I could, to the point I broke one of the clamps, and it still leaked. Ended up just taking the exhaust off and brought it to one my good friend's house and he welded it up great for us. Once I got it installed and back on the car I can officially say I really like the exhaust, it sounds good, looks good and fits pretty damn well. In my opinion, and since I got it welded for free i think it was an AWESOME deal, however here are my issues with the system.

1) The camps lick balls
2) The bolts they gave me to connect the DP to the catback were too big for the OEM DP holes so I had to buy new bolts.
3) Finally the company i bought the exhaust from said they had a lifetime warranty, and it would come with a warranty car, but I didn't get one (maybe the receipt they sent me will suffice, but i dont know?)
4) Exhaust tip sits on the bumper even when adjusted all the way down.

What I like

1) DIRT CHEAP!!!!
2) Sounds baller
3) As far as I can tell without doing my highway driving yet there is little to no drone.
4) Looks great
5) Comes with gasket
6)I also now have a huge box to make a fort with...

Oil and filter change, and replaced spark plugs. I noticed, same as last plug change, #1 came out super easy/normally but the rest were super, super tight to the point that gives a mechanic the feeling he's taking the threads out of the head too. I put never-seize on the threads of the new plugs, and they screw in smooth as silk with just finger pressure ( I use a piece of old vacuum hose on the end of the plug to start in the head). Anyone else experience this? No oil in the plug holes by the way, and all coil boots just like new; clean, nice and supple, and dielectric grease from last change still fresh-like.

Dave.

Dave:

Yep, every white block I've had has done that and just like you I put a wee bit of copper-based anti-seize on the threads every time I pull the plugs. I usually check plug gap at every 20K kms so its not like the plugs are undisturbed for 100K or anything. But with all this said, I've had other Al heads do the same thing and I've had some do the exact opposite. That is, loosen up even though the plugs were torqued to spec on installation. Interestingly, I can't recall a cast iron head ever doing either but I haven't had a huge number of cast iron heads over the years.

Cheers,

Bill

Sort of. Was driving down a narrow hill, was braking on the gears as i usually do. Was going a bit fast (slowly nearing ~55 in a 40 zone (km/h)), so i barely touched the brake - the car just shot out to the right (difference in traction i guess, the ABS / ESP had no time to correct. Talking 10-20 meters from when i hit the brake 'till impact) and wham, into a barrier.

From this:

to this?

Yup. The whole cabin is ~90% intact. It looks really bad on that picture, but really the only thing really damaged in the cabin is the passenger side front door. Other than that things has just broken loose, so i'll be pulling out everything that is intact and sell it / save it for my next XC. The Volutions was taken off for the winter, luckily :D
