Speak for yourself...in RI, it was a tropical storm.

But in NC and VA, it was a hurricane, we have millions who are still without power (OK, by the end of today, it may be down to several hundred thousand), thousands of homes destroyed, 42 deaths, roads gone...it was a hurricane...my neighbor's house flooded, and will have to be gutted...

And in Vermont and upstate NY - it was torrential rain that has devastated towns and roads...

Upgraded the long range warning/communication system. :D

118 dB of Hella Supertone goodness.

Can you post the model number of the Horns? Maybe an mp3 of the tone? :D

I'm going to replace mine as soon an my stereo upgrade is done. I was thinking to have a toggle switch so I can switch back to the stock horn if I ever just "want to say Hello"

Model: Hella SuperTone (003399801) [Make sure you get the MADE IN GERMANY ones, NOT the made in India version)

Search youtube for a comparison. Many Subaru owners have them installed and have posted before and after videos.

I was in Columbus GA in 2004 visiting a friend when hurricane Ivan came through followed by the tornadoes.
Scariest few days in my life!

I remember landing at Atlanta Airport when Ivan wasn't that far away. Scariest landing I've ever had.

Replaced all of the simulated wood trim and swapped it for the aluminum brushed trim. Looks really cool. Only problem is that the part number (30676021) to replace the piece around the gear shifter does not fit the XC70 console as it was too narrow at the base where it meets the cup holders. Bummed. I have contacted a few forum members but trying to locate a correct part number (even from a dealer) is impossible. Anyone have any ideas, otherwise I'm going to have to go with the charcoal clack colored plastic piece as a last resort?

#30676023 (mesh panel) comes up on VADIS parts reader. Confirmed that on this website too.

Will "mesh" be the same as brushed aluminum or will it be different to the brushed effect? Also Art, 30676021 does exist. Punch it into a part number check on the same website and it should come up.

I see now. It appears that part #30676021 is the shifter panel for the S60/V70 which might explain why it doesn't fit the XC70.

I guess that I've always thought the 'mesh' panels were the same as brushed aluminum. There is a very slight mesh pattern which is only visible when viewed close up. Back when I had my '01 XC, I installed a set of OE aluminum trim pieces on the glove box and door panels which I purchased online from Borton Volvo. They refer to them on their website as aluminum mesh.

Finally -- replaced the upper motor mount with the blue urethane kit from IPD

The initial test drive shows an improvement, with no 'harshness' at the steering wheel as noted by others.
I'll be getting into town later for a 60 mile round trip, with 30 miles of hard pack dirt road along the way.
If I learn anything on the road I'll post it here later.

Might drain and replace 3 liters of ATF today too before we head out...

Well
Let's see.
I got this 99 XC from my sister, a Black/Charcoal 99, with 106K miles... complete with a bunch of dings and minor dents all over the place, almost every panel is racked up in some way for next to nothing and will be my D/D for the winter.

A very good car (basically) but it needed what it needed...
So...what I've done so far

NEW PROPSHAFT FROM COLORADO DRIVESHAFT
FRONT (lower right) ENGINE MOUNT
UPPER TORQUE MOUNT
NEW FRONT STRUTS
NEW SPRING SEATS
TIMING BELT
SERP BELT
WASHER CAP
RIGHT E-BRAKE CABLE, BOTH E BRAKE SHOES AND CLIPS
TOP OIL SEAL
TIRES (Michelins), BRAKES AND ROTORS ARE ALMOST NEW
AND THE WHEELS ARE NOT CURBED!
BEVEL GEAR RE-SEALED
NEW TURBO DUMP TUBE SEAL
NEW (USED) RIGHT SEAT AND MIRROR SWITCHES
CAR HAD AN ENGINE AND TRANNY FLUSH ABOUT 20K MILES AGO SO INSIDE THE ENGINE IS QUITE CLEAN WITH TERRIFIC [thumbup] BREATHER BOX PRESSURE.

Today was my first test drive and it drove GREAT!!!
Smooth, quick and 100% rattle and squeak free.
Goes to the dent Dr next week after servicing it and PA state inspection for all the major dent removal work and to paint both bumpers and both mirrors...and a rear spoiler that should arrive in a couple of days.

(I never drove it before I got it, the propshaft was so bad).

Right now it drives in the top 1%'ile of 100K mile XCs and hopefully in a couple of weeks the body will be the same
The interior is in excellent shape so I don't need to do any leather restoration.
I will post some pictures when done and detailed.

As always, everything I own is for sale.
It is not and will not be advertised for sale until next year, but if someone is looking for a black/black XC needing nothing, contact me, it comes with about 3" of service records

My bad, 003399801 is 12 VDC (and the one you want), the original part number I gave is 003399101 and is 24 VDC and won't work with our Volvos.

Regardless both should be Made in Germany.

Hmm, just did a quick google and it looks like there is a "B" line made in India (p/n 003399803).

Unfortunately it seems to be a consistent opinion that they are nowhere near the quality or power of the Made in Germany ones.

Changed #3 ignition coil which was failing (P0303 cel) with a new IPD HD Coil and it fixed the issue... Will order the rest soon to change the others.

Changed OEM TCV which triggered P1237 with a new IPD HD TCV and the ride was smooth.

Now at the garage because the alternator decided to fail on me after taking a good wash in a automatic carwash :(

Went in Friday evening about 7pm for my 60K Service. My service shop is open til midnight so I dropped the car off and did some shopping and had dinner. Apparently, they got backed up. I got a call 2 hours later saying that they didnt even get to touch the car and that I can leave it with them and they'll give me a loaner or I can schedule another time. I left the car with them with specific instructions to call me if there are any problems. They close early on SAT and are closed on SUN. An hour before closing, I hadnt heard anything, I called the Service department and had to leave a msg. The manager called back about 20 min later and guess what... THEY HADN'T TOUCHED IT AGAIN.. he told me I should leave it til Monday. I needed it for Sunday to Haul my gear so I told Him I was coming to pick it up. He said, "I hope you can get here in 8 Min"
After some choice words, he agreed to wait for me to get there however long it took. I picked up my car and am going to write a letter... What should I demand? Should I let it go? Any how the ordeal motivated me to do some DIY work I've been thinking about.

I disagree. Poor service should never be tolerated and should be pointed out to the appropriate management at the dealership and if necessary all the way to the manufacturer. These guys already act like they have you by "the short and curlies" and they need to realize that they do have competition for your business. Now, as a customer, you need to be reasonable and it is wise to remember the limitations of anyone in the position to provide service, but these people also have the ability do their best to do the job correctly. In this case it sounds like the service manager generally had a piss-poor attitude and poor resource management skills. If he couldn't get to the car he should have said so to begin with. This "overbooking" technique is just a scam to get hold of the car and then take the customer for an expensive ride. My suggestion would be to talk to the service manager's boss and take it from there if you don't get an acceptable answer.

Good luck,

Bill

Even "good dealers" tend to do this.
Keystone Volvo overbooks... if you want to use that term.
They sometimes have 40-50 cars a day yet they still do this.
Perhaps it because there is always someone who never shows, who knows.

I guess I should ask them the reasoning behind this but I would guess that they always want their guys working, the mechanics want to work and don't want to sit around doing nothing.

I rarely make an appt. and when I do it's usually the day before.
They usually work me in either that day or the next, but there have been times it sat for 3 days because everyone showed and/or the mechanic(s) got tied up on bad jobs and for me, there are only 4 guys (out of 15) there that I will let touch my cars.

Sure its not a nice feeling when your at the mercy of a local dealership, its frustrating and damn annoying. All you want to do is seek some form of revenge by venting, but I find this totally pointless. We are currently experiencing this with our Peugeot dealership for our second car. I just hate them and just cbf'd because we know they're a total money pit and retarded.

Where I live, we have two Volvo dealerships, and the next closest one is a good 4 days drive away - one way.
My local dealer looks after me with free service, dealer price parts, helpful advice and most importantly, are just 10mins down the road. If I burn them off, Im up for full price everything and no favours elsewhere :(
That's the point I was making.

Well, I hear you. I guess my point is to do as much of the work that you can yourself and to frequent good indies, if available. I'm of the school that rather than get screwed by the Big Corporation and have to enjoy it, I'll do what's necessary to find a way to do it myself or let another little guy have the business. Hence my current process to acquire a DICE.

On the other hand, I suppose my dealer situation is a bit better than yours. My closest dealer is 2 hours away and the next closest is a about 6 hours down the road. I still don't use them at all but I know they are there if the absolute world comes to an end. Relatively next door compared to your situation in Oz. Also being retired, my labour charge is a hell of a lot cheaper than any dealer.

Thanks everyone for your advice.... I really dont want to make a stink there, because although there are other dealerships, the sales guy calls me on occasion just to say HI...and upto then, the service has been good. I've never made an appointment and they are open til midnight.. so I'll write this off as a one-time occurrence. But rest assured, I'll be on the lookout for a pattern.

Removed the roof rack rails. Stopped by a junkyard and picked up a pair of the white trim strips for $25, their "minimum" parts charge. Much better than the $400/pair from the dealer. The ones on my '01 looked like complete crap. They had a few other wagons and XCs that I may go back and investigate next week.

Had my primo local paintless dent removal technician (http://www.dentgenies.com/) smooth out 8 years of accumulated parking lot dings and creases. Looks like new again.

Thank you Volvo for paint that stands up to all those dumbs#it$ with their heads up their behinds and no regard for other peoples' property. What I'd really love to see though is a "feature" that sends an electric charge up the wrist of anyone opening a door into one of ours!

My quasi-scientific analysis of the dent pattern indicates that about 80% of parking lot door bashers are passengers. I'd guess most of those rear-seaters are senseless kids, whose parents haven't bothered to (or at least succeeded in) teaching them concern for other folks' stuff. Though I imagine there's also a smattering of really old people who lack the strength to control their own door.

Door control and bladder control tend to wane about the same time. ;)

Cleaned up a lot of scuff marks on the vinyl in the cargo area. Found that 0000 steel wool and any general-purpose household cleaner will take off 99% of them. Followed up with a little ArmorAll and the interior looks brand new.

Also replaced plugs and fuel filter. For those who haven't done the latter yet, the only tools needed are a 12mm socket, a shallow pan and something to let the pressure out of the valve. (Gas WILL spray out!) Just *squeeze* the little gray tabs on either side of the fuel line fitting to slide the hoses off the filter. It's a ten-minute job.

I don't know. I wouldn't have done it myself, but I still think it's not a bad look. Minimalist and distinctive. If you want to be distinctive I'd prefer to err on the side of minimalism rather than excessive-ism.

Of course now you could re-badge it Frigidaire or Maytag. ;) Then it would be really distinctive.

I had debadged it long ago, just to see if I liked it. I prefer it without the cross country decal, but like the badges. I haven't gotten around to putting them back on. I agree it looks rather minimilast/plain at the moment. In the absence of a true project car, my beater XC is what suffers the wrath of my boredom at the moment.

And yes, lowering is in it's very near future. And if I can source a used one, a spoiler as well.

This morning I took my XC off road and even had it up and down a ~1/8th mile rocky and slightly moguled slope starting at about 15 degrees and progressing to 40-45 degrees for the last 1/3rd. Maintaining about 5 MPH with a bit more throttle as the grade increased got it up no problem. The XC went everywhere my friend's Pathfinder did, with most of the trails rated impassible except by high clearance 4WD vehicles and a few blocked by downed trees that required driving around. I think the Yokohama Geolandar tires in 225/70-R16 had a good bit to do with the performance by increasing ground clearance over the 225/60-R16's that came on the car as well as having a very good tread design. Over all I continue to be impressed by what many call a mom's soft-roader.

Hit the jackpot this weekend... In celebration of cracking 123K miles, engine light came on. In return for sharing my dollars with my friendly and excellent Volvo service department various opportunities, including but not limited to, fuel pump, various sensors and the left rear hub replacement, were addressed and corrected.

It is now like I am driving a new car (or at least made a down payemnt on one - lol ) [thumbup] :D :)

I truly love this car!!
