    Default Mishimoto Transmission Cooler Kit

    Hey Guys

Putting an order together through FCPeuro and I'd like to know your thought are on this kit. I've been reading a lot about the addition of an external transmission cooler and I'm strongly considering it with my current upgrade. I've not been able to find a in-line filter with decent shipping to Canada so any other recommendations would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

EDIT: Found this guy in the GTA on Kijiji for the Magnefine Filter. He currently is out of stock but will expecting some in the next couple weeks. As well, he is willing to ship in Canada

Unless you tow, I don't think a trans cooler is really necessary, keeping the fluid clean is more important
Magnafine filters are supposed to be good, personally I've never used them but I keep my fluid overly clean

Year and mileage here always helps. If it's the 05 with 70K miles, you should be OK

My feelings are that this type of cooler is not very suitable for mounting low down in front of the rad - in full target mode of "any" projectile accidentally aimed at the cooler in front of the radiator. By coincidence I have a cooler arriving in the next week. I believe it is a flat plate design. The is very thermodynamically efficient and it is reasonably resilient. In the mean time I have been thinking the project through, and realise that by fitting it, I am increasing the total fluid volume of the trans oil cooling system by a factor of "x"millilitres of coolant (turns out to be 1200ml in my case =matrix+longer lines). When I have completed the project I may post up a "how to". Somewhere there is a factoid that, for every 10 degrees of celcius over 75 degrees there is a drop in efficiency of "x". This is a really important statistic; so how come I cannot remember it?

I don't tow, but I do plan on getting a hitch and doing light loads in the not so near future. I do put a 100# canoe on my roof, as well as I load up the trunk for trips, that and the fact that i'm doing a 16T upgrade makes it seem worthwhile.

Please post up your setup when you get it all together.

I like this build maybe I'll do something similar.

I carry boats on the roof regularly, at high speed, it's almost the equivalent of towing, so a cooler is definitely recommended. My setup.

I've seen your set up, but I'm unable to source the parts to Canada.

There are 2 things that concern me about an auxiliary cooler

    1) "Overcooling" the fluid during winter
Maybe this has been discussed to death. All of the installations I've seen have the auxiliary cooler after the factory cooler to aid in additional cooling. Depending on the size of the unit, i feel this would cool the fluid too much especially during -20*C weather. I have not been able to find information on the effects of "overcooled" fluid for the AW55-50, but from what I've read there is a concern of too cold fluid for any transmission. One being that the fluid doesn't reach it operating temp, as well, moisture buildup in the the transmission. Some have opted to install a bypass, either automatic or manual, for winter months.

AW55-50 has a internal cooler by-pass valve, but I think this valves function is to bypass the cooler if the hoses become clogged, or possibly that the colder fluid in the cooler creates a force which cause the valve to by-pass. Again, I'm unable to find more information and only speculating.

This link page 13 (a good read if anything): http://www.myvolvolibrary.info/Tech_...55-50%20SN.pdf

    2) Cooler sizing
What would be the most effective size for my application? It would be nice to get the dimensions for the OE unit offered for the R.

If anything I think I will install the auxiliary cooler on the feed line for the factory cooler to aid in cooling instead of providing additional cooling, but I'm still open to opinions.

    Thank You

Been doing some reading. Apparentlly Long Manufacturing sells a self regulating cooler, and it's made in Canada.

I'm thinking of the LPD4542 would be enough for my setup

EDIT: Figured out that B&M is repackaging this cooler under Part#70264. I went ahead and ordered one from amazon along with a magnefine filter.

I ordered a very similar kit just one size bigger LPD4543, not stacked plate but plate and fin. I notice the instructions say AFTER OE cooler is essential. Just one question. There are four quick fit nylon rods as one choice of fitting kit. I can see these pass through the holes in the cooler brackets but where do they go in the air con condenser? Surely not through the fins which seem certain to rupture? I am inclined to think it is a bumper off fit after all, since it is just about the only way to see the air con cooler and radiator in any detail. Thanks for the link to the cooler bypass. Please post a write up with photo's when you have finished your project. Are you doing a fluid flush beforehand?

I was going to see what I could mock up for a mounting location when I get the unit in hand. I'm thinking of somehow creating a bracket that will support it independently. I'll be installing this along with the rest of my upgrades, but I'll also post some pics here.

I have done a flush not to long ago, so I'll just top up the system after install. I've bought two magefine filters, one for the nextime I flush, but I'm kind of questioning the change interval stated on the web page of once a year. I'm going to stick with mileage as a change interval along with a flush.
