If you know a young hero, consider nominating him or her for the 2006 “Alexandra Scott Butterfly Award,” presented by Volvo Cars of North America to celebrate youth heroes.The second annual Alexandra Scott Butterfly Award is part of the Volvo for life Awards, Volvo’s annual program to seek out and celebrate heroes of all ages. Today through Jan. 15, 2006, individuals nationwide are encouraged to visit www.volvoforlifeawards.com to nominate a child hero they know. Volvo will donate $25,000 to the Butterfly Award winner’s charity of choice.The award is named in honor of Alexandra Scott, one of the first winning heroes in the Volvo for life Awards and an eight-year-old cancer patient from Wynnewood, Pa. She gained national attention for her efforts to raise money for pediatric cancer research by holding annual lemonade stands. What started as a simple but passionate idea has inspired a worldwide grassroots fundraising effort that raised millions of dollars to fight cancer in kids. Sadly, Alex passed away in 2004. Parents Jay and Elizabeth Scott continue promoting Alex’s cause and raising money for pediatric cancer research through their foundation, Alex’s Lemonade Stand.”Shortly before she died, Alex spoke to her parents about butterflies; since then, the butterfly has come to symbolize Alex, her life and her work,” said Anne B?lec, president and chief executive officer for Volvo Cars of North America. “The Alexandra Scott Butterfly Award will serve as an enduring tribute to her memory.”In April, Alex’s parents will select the winner of the Butterfly Award. For the Scotts’ efforts, Volvo will also donate $25,000 to Alex’s Lemonade Stand.The Butterfly Award winner will be flown to New York City on April 12, 2006 to be honored at the annual Volvo for life Awards Ceremony.
