Get rid of the dog.
But seriously... :P You're going to want to make sure that the carpet and mats where the dog was are dry; if not you're going to have some really nasty smells. I would just do for a long drive on a warm day with the windows open and AC+heat on to dry out any moisture in the vents. However, again make sure that the undersides of the mats or carpet are dry. That is most likely where the odor is coming from, not the vents.

My old 2000 Audi used to give a damp stinky smell from the AC vents and that was because of the cabin air filter needing changing (not the same as the engine air filter). I assume Volvos have one too.
Doesn't sound like that's the same as your issue, but keep it in mind for future as you may want to do it more often.
I am pretty obsessive about drying her off when she is in the car (back on a mat with towels even) - will try the dry out with the vents cranked heat >> AC.
Car is new (1 yr) so should not be a filter issue but will give it a try.
Thanks for this!

The cabin filter would affect smells coming into the car, but wouldn't do anything for odors already there.

have dogs
use lysol
lysol stinks for a while
then car is fine...
then dog in car...
then all is good until i have to use lysol again....
YMMV
Used to have a dog in my wifes old Subaru Forester, most effective way: vacuum car and dry any wet spots, then buy a box or two of those 1kg laundry concentrate powder. Leave them unopened in the car for a week. Your car will smell of laundry detergent and nothing else after that. And when the detergent smell eventually goes away, the dog smell will no longer linger.
