Greetings!
When I accelerate slowly, my xc will thud once at 55 mph.
I presume this is when it shifts into 4th.
This does not happen when I accelerate at full throttle.
Mileage is 84,700.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to add that it's a 2000 v70, turbo, awd.
Thanks for responding, JRL.
It's a 4 speed automatic.
I am new to this forum but have noticed that the 4 or 5 speed argument has come up more than once.I have a 2000 xc and it DOES have the 4 speed automatic. From what I understand some 2000's have the 4speed (probably the early ones) and some the 5. When I took my car in to the volvo dealership for a service they also said 4speed and the transmission was flushed accordingly.
Edmunds specs page also lists as 4 speed automatic.

Hi JRL,
Sorry! I'm not a guy and have blond hair which could partially explain my ignorance concerning cars.
And the owner's manual leaves a lot to be desired. It lists 2 kind of auto transmissions--4 speed auto TURBO and 5 speed auto NOT TURBO -- I assumed I had the 4 speed since my wagon is a turbo and the gear indicator by the shifter corresponds with the manual showing the 4 speed auto. That is D 3 2 1.
I've only driven it about 4 times and before I bought it, I had the Swedish Solution (Cleveland) check it and drive it. They said it was a great car.
It doesn't do the thud every time it accelerates, so maybe they missed it.
Thanks again for trying to help me.
I don't know what you all are reading. In 2000 ALL S and V70s are FIVE (5) speeds.
Look at your selector again, none say 1,2,3,D even the 4 speeds, they leave out a gear on the selector.
If yours was a 4 speed, it says 1,3,D and the 5 speeds say 1,3,4,D
Look again, write it down, then come back and tell me EXACTLY what your gear selector says

..and now for you.
There is NO argument. ALL 2000s are 5 speeds plain and simple. Please, believe me when I tell you this.
There are no "early ones" or later ones. Edmunds is WRONG
(they are wrong MANY times with many cars) and if you want to make a little wager, ANYTHING, I'm all for it. You have a 2000, you have a 5 speed.
You too, look at your gear selector. There will be FOUR positions, one gear is missing, the 4 speeds have THREE positions on the selector, one gear is missing.
Write them down carefully, you will see that I'm right
