Default Longevity of engine and valve train?

Continuing to enjoy my newly bought used XC. Just curious about how long on average the motor is good for before valve job or rebuild is needed. Not talking about ETM's, motor mounts, etc. Assuming, of course, regular 7,500 mile oil changes and good routine maintainance.

Taxidrivers usually drive these cars for more than 400.000 km. That is about 300.000 miles. Then they sell the car. I figure you can drive this car 500.000 miles before the engine gives up.

Wow! That's good to know. I think the body and interior will hold up pretty well, but on the other hand, how many electronic throttle modules would you have to go through?

I'm more concerned about the longevity of the viscous coupling and bevel gear than the engine itself. Those engines are very good but again it's the other stuff that I'm concerned. Just got my transmission replaced monday on my car. Also I did ask the question on this forum with no succes. But I'm trying to get feed-back on XC owners ( 2002 and older) and high milleage.

    Hi blue911,
I think taxis are not the average (driven) cars.
For one, the engine of a taxi is almost always "warm", only to be shut down for maintenance. The ratio of cold versus warm driven miles is a very determining factor for the life expectancy of an engine.
Don't let this spoil your good mood, if you drive your car with some sense(using a good quality oil, don't let the engine work too hard while still cold etc), the Volvo 2.5T engine will serve you well for many, many miles

Our 1987 740GLE has 275K miles on the original engine with zero work done. I would hope that the 5 cyl is built off that design as I expect the 99XC and the 03XC to at least match the 87. -Dick

I think the 5 cyl aluminium engine is actually derived from the straight 6 cylinder which Volvo actually bought from Audi who got it from Porsche who devolopped it in the first place. It has nothing in common with the 740 engine (cast iron?).

That may be so, but a 5 cylinder engine is quite different in design from a 4 or 6 cylinder, it would not surprise me that Volvo started from scratch when they develloped the 5 cylinder (petrol) engines inuse today.

The 87 740 GLE has a cast Al block. As a Nuclear Engineer, 'I think' is not in my lexicon of words. Either you know or you don't know the derivation of the 5 cyl engine. If you do know, please supply references.-Dick
