I think it's time to put the metal screens behind the bumper.

That's the condenser which you rarely replace. Put a stone guard like what I did to mine using window nets.

There is a tradeoff you run into if you put a screen in front of the radiator -- it will prevent stone gouges but also reduces airflow. The radiator works best with what's called laminar airflow (smooth). When you place a screen in the grille, it disrupts smooth airflow, introducing eddies (turbulent airflow).
You can assess the job the radiator is doing on a hot day by plugging in an OBD-II scanner. The engine coolant temp. should be in the 88-90C range. If it's staying above 90C, then you're running hotter than the oil lube system was designed for. This leads to progressive engine wear / shortened life.
