Are the transmissions from a 2002 V70 2.4t (5 speed automatic AW50-55 0fwd and the 2002 V70 X/C AWD 5 speed automatic interchangeable. I have a used V70 tranny, but I own a V70 X/C.

Look at the trans where the angle drive is supposed to attach - It will not bolt on to the v70 trans and there are no splines for the coupler. You could put the v70 trans in and remove the driveshaft, converting to fwd if you wanted. Not sure about the axle lengths between v and xv, but you should be able to use the left xc axle in a v transmission.

I think Hoonk is right, except you’ll need a V70 passenger side axle - which is a bit longer than an XC axle.

Thank you for the confirmation. The car is undergoing a Stage Zero restoration and is in great shape; engine and transmission work fine at 168,000 miles.
This cars' previous owner was as meticulous as I am and it was a great find; close to perfect condition. Originally purchased for my son, who could not afford the maintenance (even with a mechanic in the family), the car is now mine. Everything (and I mean just about everything) has been replaced with Volvo or OEM parts. Going to drop the engine and tranny next. Engine will get a port, polish, valve job on the head and the Rings/Bearings will be replaced in the block; turbo will get a rebuild also. Planning on installing a rebuilt transmission, as I would like a reliable car. The AWD system is getting serviced as soon as I can get the Mustang off the lift. Yes, I am old enough to deserve a 4 post automotive lift in my back yard! Cooling fan, Power Steering pump, a/c compressor and alternator (200 amp upgrade for the stereo, which is another whole story) are next on the replacement list, as they are the last rotating pieces that are not new.
I just stripped a 2.4T V70 for all those hard to find parts necessary to keep an old car on the road; this is how I ended up with the transmission. Now I need to decide if I should dispose of the transmission or take it apart and figure out how automatic transmissions work. My standard line to customers is "I can fix Anything, except automatic transmissions."

This isn’t a particularly difficult transmission to figure out.

Given: I would not go through the extensive overhaul you are talking. I have a '01 which has the same engine and transmission at 257K mi. Has been very reliable. If you keep up with 30K tranny flushes you should be good. If you are really worried the valve body is compromised, rebuild it. Otherwise, I would suggest putting in a new used transmission is potentially introducing more opportunity for problem due to the unknowns than sticking with what you have and servicing it.

No used tranny's here; too much labor to replace it. Actually looking into a newly rebuilt transmission to install when the car gets a mild motor rebuild. I appreciate the advice to leave well enough alone. I am working out the last few minor issues, prior to playing with the car for a while. Probably won't attack the motor/turbo/tranny for a year or so. I like to build turbo'ed engines and am inclined to pull out the motor and clean everything up inside, just to keep it perfect. Which brings up my next question: Any advice on how many performance upgrades (exhaust, intercooler, larger turbos) are advisable, if I want to keep the car reliable. The AWD system in my car is working flawlessly (scheduled for service soon), but I am leery of adding an excessive amount of horsepower to an AWD car.

Thank you to Astro 14 too. I just realized ( when I saw the cost of the manual) that I have a buddy who is a factory trained Ford mechanic and he has all the service manuals for the transmission..
