Besides all the issues with springs as previously mentioned, my problem is that when I put everything back together, the new brakes were not very good. Even with the maximum adjustment at the hand brake lever, the brake pressure is not good enough to hold the car at idle. I took everything apart again making sure everything was as it should be, put it all back together and .... same result! I checked the new shoes against the old shoes and the disc/drum etc. and everything was correct. Is there another adjustment in the cables that I missed?

As any other brakes, they need to break in.

As these are parking brakes, is there really no breaking in required?

ALL brakes require breaking in, so that contacting surfaces will mate each other. You can simply do nothing at this point, and some time later they will start to catch.

In my case the brake is adjusted to the max but not holding the car at idle. I have driven it slowly and pulled the brake lever to bed them in but it didn't help.

So I inspected my parking brakes today after hearing a noise last week while reversing. Typical case of delamination.

Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket shoes. Have they lasted longer, about the same, not as long as Volvo brand.

Bosch (I'd assume OEM) are half the price of Genuine Volvo and ProParts Sweden are a little less from FCP. I see no reason to get Volvo ones if the aftermarket ones last just as long.

Does the price really matter if you have to do it once in 10 years?

Actually this will be the second time this side has been done in my almost four years of ownership. No the price difference isn't that drastic but I'd just like to know if the aftermarket ones are up to the task. Though FCP does have their lifetime guarantee so if they go bad in a year I'd just get new ones for free*.

I think you have a problem with parking brake hardware.

Our 2002 V70 (late 2001 build) had parking shoes replaced couple of years ago, no delamination. Same with 2005 XC70.

The trick i had for getting the tension springs back on to the shoes was to use a large flat bladed screwdriver and leverage it off the wheel hub. Worked like a charm for 2 sets so far. The retaining springs though, needle nose pliers.
