    Red face AWD problems

Are you sure you aren't mistaken, and your problem has nothing to do with spinning tires? The XC does not have enough power to be spinning its front wheels from a stop.... so your problem is most likely a broken AWD or transmission part. Maybe your dealer misdiagnosed.

Left front would spin in the wet. 4wd came in with a bang, belatedly, useless for slow traction on ice. Mentioned this to service manager when I bought the car, he said it was normal. Now we're in winter and it was not doing well. Got it diagnosed, pressure sensor replaced ($424.05, quoted two hours but they did it in 20 mins cos they were closing!!), fantastic difference, like a brand new car. Complained to the big cheese (Santa Fe Volvo, about having mentioned it 6 months ago, when i bought it, in summer) and he told me where to shove it.
They also told me the oil breather box needed replacing, sump pressure was pushing out the dipstick, quoted $1535.00, of which parts are $891.58, labor $643 for 6 1/2 hrs. Same parts online one by one are $495, or the whole kit for DIY $295, and there's an excellent youtube how to do it. But I suspect it's not even necessary, there's no pressure from the dipstick hole. Car goes like sh*t-off-a-shovel. 18mpg
    We're all patsies, right?

Sounds like your AWD is fixed.

I wouldn't put off the PCV replacement. It's absolutely necessary. And there should be vacuum at the dipstick hole at idle. But without a gauge, you can't tell. Further, good at idle doesn't mean good through the RPM range.

A plugged PCV will eventually destroy your cam and/or crank seals, which cost just much as the PCV replacement to fix. But that's a high quote on price. I've done both cars' PCV systems as a DIY for about $300.
