    Default Oil Consumption question

Hi Folks, just a question about oil consumption....
My 04 XC had its 135000 Km (85000 miles) service a few months ago, and it has since traveled 4000 kms (2500 miles). I check the dipstick this morning and the oil level was halfway between the Full and Fill marks. Is this normal oil consumption for this vehicle?
    Cheers...jc

Yes, that's not bad oil consumption for 2500 miles, especially if conventional oil is being used.

Do you know for sure the oil was filled to the top mark when the change was done? Maybe it was a little low to start with...

Not anything to worry about, just keep an eye on it.

1/2 QT in 2500 miles is not bad at all...

It isn't really an issue until about 1 QT in 1,200 miles...and at that level, it's usually a clogged PCV...

Be sure the oil level check is done in consistent conditions. Level ground before you start first time for the day is a good time. The oil level will be less than full mark as cold oil contracts. The Volvo N engines are slow to drain back from head to crankcase so if you shut off engine the oil level will not be accurate for 10 minutes on a operating temp engine due to this.

I have had several Volvos with this engine since its first use in 92 in the 960. I have had several that would consume some oil if I was keeping the level at full mark and not use it past half way on dipstick scale. If I only filled to that midpoint when I changed oil then there was no consumption.

    Hello Astro14,

Should there be blue smoke in the back of the exhaust when it eats that much oil ?

I have to add 1-2 kg each 2000 km....

I have noticed that after driving a while , when I turn off the engine and get out of the car , there's a smell of burned oil coming from the hood.
Can it be the turbo that eats that much oil ?

I have 250,000 on my XC . PCV is a must ? (already bought it a while ago + all needed gaskets ).

    Appreciate any suggestion..

In my experience, you don't really see blue smoke until the consumption gets to the 1QT/100 miles range...

If you're smelling burned oil on shutdown, there is oil on something hot (like the manifold), and that means that you've got a leak somewhere...not burning the oil, but consuming it via a leak...
