    Default Rumbling in the engine

    1999 v70xc just turned 154k miles.

driving uphill into the mountains at 70mph (3000 rpm) the engine started to rumble and the steering wheel was shaking, the check engine light started flashing. engine was not overheating and cooled off very easily once i pulled over and turned the heat on. the check engine light stayed on. i drove uphill to exit off the highway, exited, and then went back down the mountain. I only got the vibrating steering wheel when accelerating on a level surface or incline.

    Ideas??

    Thank you!

The code behind the check engine light will tell you more than any of us can.

Don't know about the check-engine light, but the symptoms sound a lot like a sticky front brake caliper.

Or your front motor mount is collapsed
If so, the engine is lying on the subframe and can make all sorts of noises and vibrations
Check it out, right side of car. Remove the right front wheel, pull pack the rubber liner and it's right there.
Take a prybar to it, if it moves you will see if it's separated or worse, totally collapsed.
On AWD Volvos these "go bad" about every 100K or so

A collapsed mount wouldn't trigger a CEL though.

i was thinking maybe a bad spark plug coil or two...

turns out that there is no compression in the valve to spark plug number three.
