    Default New 04 XC90 T6

Just got one for the wife. She loves it so far. I have an 01 XC70. Any heads ups about this XC90? We want to be as proactive as possible. Considering I just got my tranny issues straight with my XC70.

    88K on the XC90
Timing belt done at 78K (pre purchase)

Look for "step bars" for the jeep. My wife is short....

    Thanks!

    My condolences
You obviously did not do your homework
You think you had tranny issues with your XC70? Wait a while...

EVERY SINGLE XC90T6 BLOWS IT'S POS GM 4 SPEED TRANNY
Many are on their 3rd by now. They seem to last about 60-90K miles.

Why do you think you probably got it on the cheap, (I sure hope you got it cheap)!

(You may want to know, Volvo pays some or all of the $$ damage to replace trannies on these vehicles) and if yours is original at 80K miles it's due to go south pretty darn soon!
Usually the radiator and cooling line have to be replaced along with the transmission they become contaminated.
Forget the bars you need to start saving your pennies

Jim is 100000000000% correct, I am one of the people on the 3rd tranny. I just did a 2500 mile trip to orlando in July 2011, and this weekend i will be going to pittsburg another 1000 miles.

I will be hitting 160,000 this weekend and I love her. I will take her everywhere. She has not let me down, but on the first sign of trouble she will get the attention she deserves. I have spent $5000+ in the last year on repairs/upgrades and many might as wells since i am planning on keeping the car.

This is how she sits today right now...

There are a couple of companies that will rebuild most GM Auto 4 speeds to handle more power. The 4T60-E is a good transmission, but it was not designed for the power output of the T6 or the weight of the car. Its was for this reason that GM used the 4T65-E HD Transaxles on the supercharged 3.8 liter cars.

Has anyone thought to have their 4T60-E transmission rebuilt with 65HD internals?

I just did a little more research on the issue... It seems that Volvo modified the Valve body in some way which may have induced reliability issues. It might be worth a look to see if the standard GM Valve body would work or would work with slight modification.

I was a SuperMod on several GM forums from 2001-2007 in charge of Performance modification, Drive train, and Driveability. I just didn't see that many issues with the cars that had the 60-E or 65-E for that matter. Most would get slippage only once they went high boost turbo or ran a roots blower with a 9+ PSI pulley. Most of these guys just swapped in an HD, but I don't think it would be an easy swap for the XC90s due to the Volvo TCM and different wiring.

The best thing I would say, would be to do a good performance rebuild which usually includes a lot of HD components that are compatible with the 60-E. Torque handling at that point should be sufficient to handle the Torque of the T6 and the weight of the XC90.

The tranny in your car is the "small" GM tranny, the one that went into Cavaliers, etc.
Now it's expected to work in a 5000 lb vehicle with AWD.
While they fail in S60T6s the failure rate is 10-15% of XC90 T6s

JRL, yer a comedienne. The V8 Cadillac DeVille was a small car? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_4T60-E_transmission The Beretta was the smallest car this family of transes went into, and GM used a version in their SUVs

^^^ I didn't want to be the one to say it, haha. Yes the 4T60-E has been used in some smaller cars but that was long ago. More recently GM small cars have the 4T40-E or 4T45-E. The 60-E was largely replaced by the 65-E and 65-E HD as the cars received upgrades in power with most newer Cadillacs and V8 Oldsmobiles(Aurora) moving to the 4T80-E.

Is the weight really the issue, did any of those cars have a turbo engine in them making
    the power the T6 does?
