Well, the spy-shots of the next-generation XC70 seem to suggest that it is based upon the new S80 coming out this spring, and the new S80 comes standard with an inline 6, with an optional V8. So, it seems likely that the XC70 would have the same options. But I'm speculating.

I agree with Skibo that the 2008 XC70 will have as standard the same in line six that now comes in the 2007 S80. Sorry to see the 2.5 T go as we have this engine in both our S80 and XC70. Great gas mileage and plenty of power when needed by using the turbo charger. As far as a V-8 in the XC70, that would be a surprise.

I wonder if the 2.5T will remain the powerplant for the S40 and C70?

We too have both an XC70 & an S80 with the 2.5T which we think is outstanding for our purposes. I'd hate to see it go.

The 3.2 six is part of the Ford Europe engine family. The engine is already in the S80 and Land Rover Freelander.

At 208 HP the existing engine in the XC70 is just plain anemic. It is the only complaint that I have with an otherwise fine vehicle.

When I compare it to the 3.5 ltr 6 cyl engine in our Avalon (270 HP) or the 3.2 ltr 6 cyl in the Mercedes, the Volvo comes up real short in terms of acceleration. On top of that, the Avalon gets better gas mileage (realize its not AWD) than the XC70.

I hope Volvo offers the larger motor and will seriously consider upgrading if it gets into the 275HP range as I love the car for the rest.

New XC will have a 6 standard and perhaps a V8 optional

I too would be sorry to see the 2.5T go. Its been a good engine for Volvo and the XC70. What I don't understand about the possible use of the 3.2 inline six is that while it has a significant increase in power over the 2.5T, its performance and fuel economy is not that much better than the 2.5T.

Looking at the UK Volvo site where thay have both the 2.5T and the 3.2 available for the six-speed auto S80, these are the figures.
    Power : 2.5T 200hp @ 4,800 rpm ; 3.2 238hp @ 6,200 rpm
    Torque : 2.5T 300Nm @ 1,500 rpm ; 3.2 320Nm @ 3,200 rpm
    0-62mph : 2.5T 7.5 sec ; 3.2 7.4 sec
    Fuel economy (combined) : 2.5T 23.7 mpg ; 3.2 24.0 mpg
(converted from 28.5 & 28.8 miles per imperial gallon)

I don't see the sense in changing an engine for very minor improvements in performance and fuel economy - plus I suspect pay more for the 3.2.

Towing would be better. Prob 5000 lbs range, I would think.

    BillAileo:

Also thinking of using the OSD in the future possibly for a new C70. I guess you found the experience worthwhile since you did it twice. Do you go through a local dealer for the paperwork and delivery once the vehicle reaches the US?
