I was wrong, there is a little flap on the side of the leak off connector that needs to be very carefully lifted with a small flat head screwdriver, and then the outer shell lifts to reveal the claw. Beware, I broke two little flaps out of the five, however so far the pressure in the pipe doesn't seem to be a problem once the outer shell is pushed back over the claw.
