If your car shifts fine first thing in the morning but then the shifting goes to hell after about 10 minutes of driving, this could be a sign of a worn valve body. As the ATF warms up it also thins out and you can then lose pressure because of the worn passages in the VB, negatively impacting the shifting. As others suggest, definitely replace the transmission oil first and then see what you get.

OK, I think for now I'm just gonna do a total ATF flush and see where I am before my head starts spinning with the thoughts of complex transmission tasks. I'll report back. Thank you!! Dave

So I picked up the XC last night, had about a 30 mile drive (in the rain) to get her home. After about a half hour I came to a stop light and gently accelerated from the stop. Car seemed to accelerate fine and shifted nice and smooth. Made it all the way home with no problems. If I would have pushed it hard from the stop it probably would have slipped.

I will first do the complete flush on the 04 and will do the same on my 03 (it might become jealous otherwise) as soon as my Toyota ATF arrives. Dave

Keep in mind, if your current ATF is very old and worn out, when you refresh with new fluid your TCM (transmission computer) may need some time to adjust the VB to the thicker viscosity. Shifting may feel a little off at first but overall the shifts should be smoother and improve over time. If the new fluid doesn't improve the shifting...

Or, fresh ATF may expose the worn valve body and make things worse. After flushing my transmission, which already had some 2-3 and 3-4 shifting delays and flares, it then developed a delayed and harsh shift from park into drive. At that point, I accelerated my decision to put in a new valve body.

In my opinion, the OP is headed for a valve body at the minimum. I would worry about the slipping already being experienced. It's possible the friction plates are already worn to the point of needing replacement. A valve body alone isn't going to be enough in that case. It's also possible that the reason for slippage is that the valve body isn't delivering the required pressure to the clutch plates. In that case, a valve body replacement should fix things.

In my case, my transmission held all gears fine once it was in the gear, so I had some confidence in doing just the valve body. In the OP's case, I'm less confident.

I was looking for something I saw once about using a common ebay-available A-W valve body that needed slight mods to work on the XC70. Didn't find it.

You can use an ACDELCO (AW valve body) part with some modifications for Volvo application.

$419 for a brand new valve body, which includes solenoids

$419 would be really cool, but you need to be able to ship to a military post office. Check the fine print on Amazon. It only ships to an APO or FPO. I knew there was some reason I didn't order from Amazon. I got mine on ebay for $530 a year ago. Could be cheaper there now, too. Nice notes in the box.com file.
