The belt protector is screwed on to the bracket at oil sump. Is oil sump gasket and seal failing too? See #2

Well any updates on what caused this??

Unless I'm missing something, the two OP pictures suggests it is a junkyard car. And honorable OP is testing forum's know how.

Unfortunately, would have liked to know what actually caused this, so I could have been aware of the problem and watched for it during maintenance procedures. hope i got a passing grade if this is a test of some sort?

I pried the cover back and took a peek at mine today......just in case. All appeared well.

Something looks to be hitting it. If it was an idler pulley, WP etc, I think the whole thing would be frayed or eaten off by now and not just partially frayed.

The oil leak certainly isn't helping though.

Lots of guesses as to the reason for the wear, but the OP has offered no results as to what the problem was?

Is it hitting the plastic cover that is bolted to the block and behind the timing belt? The side timing belt cover snaps into this, but the rear most area by the firewall could be loose. The cover on the S60 is cracked in half above the water pump so I can see how this could happen.

Weak or improperly installed tensioner. Belt is walking and hitting the cover.
If it continues t will walk right off and KABOOM!

Did the OP install a belt and no new tensioner?
Many newbies do this trying to save money, a very poor decision!!
