Default Roof Rack Cross Bar Remova - Torx Driver

    Found this old post:
    http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showth...7981#post97981

Especially in Alaska, I despise buying anything from the dealer.

I have a roof cross bar I need to remove. I need a orx driver that will reach the bolt.
I have the torx driver set I bought from Lowes, but the driver is too short to reach the
bolt. What makes the OEM roof cross bar torx driver "tamper proof". The hardware
store also calls theirs, "tamper proof". What in the world makes it "tamper proof",
it's just a set of different sized bits? The OEM, I can understand since it looks as it
is just specially made for the roof cross bars. Also, what is the risk of using an
ordinary long-enough T30 torx screw bit?

    Thanks.

Tamper proof or security bits have a hole in the middle to fit into the security bolt. See the link for an example set.

Normal torx bits will not work.
You should be able to find long torx bits that work.

Whenever I see a torx with hole in the middle, I have always wondered what the hole is for.
I actually have some torx bits that have holes in them, though they are the real short ones,
and I cannot use the adapter since it is wider than the crossbar opening. I have always
needed a long torx bit, guess it's time to get me a set of the long ones. The OEM tool has
a guage, I believe, for torqueing. Any disadvantage in using a long 'regular holed bit'?

    Thank you for your reply.

It's a tamper proof torx. No worries using a long bit to remove the bars, but the built in torque gauge on the Volvo tool keeps you from overtightening the rack when you out it back on. It doesn't take a lot of torque to put the rack back on...be gentle...

No risk using a long enough tamper proof torx. Here's the parts page from Volvo - two bits offered, item #3 - 8624192 for that style bar (bought one from volvo a few years ago for $13.64), and #23 for the other style bars.

    No way!

Hang on to your loathing for the dealer! Save your money! Be "smart" and use a substitute tool!

Then blame Volvo for making lousy products when you overtorque it later...

And spend $250 on a new rack to replace the one that you ruined by saving a few dollars on a tool...but it will be Volvo's fault!

    Bought this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/371873605801
I just tightened it snugged should I be worried if it's over tightened?
