During an inspection for another problem (see oxygen sensors) my dealer informed me that my oil was very dark.  I personally changed the oil and filter less than 2000 miles ago, using Castrol full synthetic, 10W30.  I confirm that all oil containers were sealed and the oil is now very dark.  There has been no consumption and the engine runs fine, normal temperature, normal gas mileage, no noticeable exhaust.  Could this be defective oil? (my sense is no, but ?)  Could this be associated with sudden appearance of check engine light?
    Suggestions please.

Could be that one of the additives is dissolving sludge that wasn't disturbed by the previous oil - best way to check is to send oil sample for spectrographic analysis (metals only). Do a search for a lab near you. Cost shouldn't be more than $20. Using the proper oil is a huge subject that is always hotly debated. Read the fine print on the oil's packaging: not just the SAE grade. You'll find big differences in additives.
