Default 2005 XC70 Cost of DIFFERENTIAL ELECTRONIC MODULE Replacement

Recently, "Anti-Skid Service Required" warning came on my 2005 XC70. When I took it to my local dealer shop, the diagnostic result stated that its DEM failed internally and needed replacing. The shop needed it ordered and I needed to pay in advance in the amount of $2559.31 just for the part. I was surprised that a new DEM cost this much and would like your verification that it does indeed cost this much.

    That's the retail price...

    DONT DO IT.

I would get the DEM rebuilt by XEMODEX for about $400. Five minutes to get the old one out. Ship it. Put your rebuilt unit back in the car a week later.

Also, I should add that the DEM is usually blown because the AOC pump is running too hot. Change the Haldex oil and filter.

Find a good independent shop, skip the dealer on this one.

And install a new DEM pressure sensor
Is you shop SURE the DEM is bad?
I've never seen the "Anti Skid" light on for a BAD DEM, it's usually something else and nothing AWD related

Have them send the part back, your car needs more diagnosing

anti-skid warning IS NOT caused by a DEM failure. If you want to fix your anti skid warning you might want to have someone diagnose your car correctly.

I have no doubt your DEM has failed, and they are expensive to replace. As others have said the pump is usually what causes the DEM to fail. If you want to fix your AWD - Xemodex is a good source. By the way if you install a replacement DEM with a bad pump, your Brandy-new DEM melts

(a common item that breaks with DSTC cars is the steering angle sensor. Or the ABS control unit itself. Have seen several cars that had a axle bolt left loose cause abs problems also! - )

My car is reporting the same problem - Anti-Skid service required. I'm going to scan it with my VIDA-DICE unit and see what it says. I hope that I don't have to replace the pump and all that other stuff because the driveshaft is probably going to be a huge pain in the ass to remove.

Don't forget the yaw sensor in/under the driver's floorboard
If it got wet, it rapidly will fail or sometimes they just fail on their own.

Did you test your AWD first?
    It's quite easy to do.

DEM problems WILL NOT cause an "Anti-Skid service warning". The DEM does not send any messages to the dash even when there are DEM codes stored.

You don't have to remove the drive shaft to replace any of the likely components that could be causing the Anti-Skid warning - steering angle sensor, abs control unit, abs pump, yaw sensor, wheel sensor, damaged wiring or tone ring, loose axle bolt.

That's funny. This is what the used-to-be-a-volvo-dealer garage in my city told me - that "anti-skid service required" usually means the AWD isn't working. I know it pulls more like a FWD car, but I floored it in the rain and it really took off without too much wheel spin, so I thought the AWD was working well. It also hops on dry pavement at very low speeds. If I don't have to pull the driveshaft to get rid of this problem then I'll be super happy about that. I hear they can be a real bear in Canada because of the corrosion.
In the mean time it goes back to the garage tonight for the follow-up to the initial safety inspection I had done when I purchased the car.
