Default Mishap with Power steering reservoir cap

I made a 300 mile round trip last weekend and the power assistance on the steering deteriorated in the last 2-3 miles. Lifting the hood I found the reservoir cap had come completely off and was lying on the engine and much of the fluid had leaked. The cap was minus the spring and two metal parts that form the screw on part and compress the seal. When I fished around in the reservoir with a magnetic pick-up I found them. However, the cap is not repairable and I am awaiting a replacement. It seems the spring (which is under considerable compression) is held in place by the diameter of the end of the spring seating on a waisted area of the oil level rod. There is no pin or clip. If this had happened at any other stage of the journey I would have been in serious trouble!

    Nick:

The fix here is to replace the old style tank with the new one with the screw-on cap instead of the old "bayonet" style. Plus the new ones don't seem to leak past the cap seal as readily.

    Cheers,
