Default Ignition key sticking in ignition key lock

Periodically my ignition keys will not release from the ignition lock. I have tried using lock ease & WD40, which seems to help for a while then the keys (either one) won't release. The keys work just fine in the drivers door lock. Any ideas as to what is causing the keys to stick?

The ignition lock is connected by a small cable to the shifter.
It's there to be sure that you have the car in park when
    the key is removed.

Check for a sticky shifter button or a shift lock override
button that's not popping all the way back up.

+1 Usually the shifter release button (the button you squeeze to get the car out of park) does not pop back all the way and prevents the key from turning back completely. As long as the cable is adjusted correctly a gentle spray of WD40 behind the button sometimes solves the problem, some vendors sell the button by itself (they crack) or a new shift knob will solve the problem. Wiggle or try to pull button back out with two fingertips in the meantime.

I have a 2000 V70 XC with this same problem.

It does it EVERYTIME I turn it off.

I have to use my thumb and forefinger to "pull" the shifter knob back out. it does not spring load back out when the car is placed in park.

As a consequence, the shifter is not locked in D either, and can be pulled down into the lower ranges at any speed. Also dangerous!!

The spring action on the button is fine. so I suspect the Cable or the Shift Override button sticking are the actual culprits.

IPD has several items for the shifters in these cars.
Have a look at the Shifter Knob Button Repair Kit.
This should solve your sticky shifter button problem.
