Default low oil pressure light comes on right after engine start

    Hello,

The low oil pressure light comes on right after engine start in my V70 XC (year 2000, 70000 miles). Only for a short time though, it basically turns off once I start driving. The engine sometimes (not always) sputters when I first step on the gas, too.

I've had this problem for a while (2 or 3 months). It started soon after 100000 mile service. Had the repair shop look at it 5 weeks ago, but they just changed oil (report says oil was a quarter low). Problem still persists - any idea what could be wrong?

    Thanks!

You probably need new O-rings in the oil pan, a PIA job... but necessary
Don't continue to drive it like this
Also check the internal lines and journels from the oil pump while the pan is off.

Probably needs a breather box replacement at the same time

and use a VOLVO shop not a general mechanic

Thanks for the response! I always use Volvo only shops, all 10 years I had this car

Besides being a PIA job, how long would it take a shop to do this? I need the car Friday for a 250 mile trip, not sure if my shop can get it done till then. What's the danger of driving without fixing it first?

It's a 3-5 hour job and then another 4-5 for the PCV (which can be done separately).
Bottom line is you have some sort of oil pressure issue and any kind of driving is not a good idea.
You really don't know if you're doing major damage or not at this point.

Oh and this is a KNOWN Volvo issue and if your VOLVO shop just "added oil" ... TAKE IT TO ANOTHER SHOP"
This should not be happening at 70K miles unless it's been severely NOT maintained.
How often do you change the oil? (answer truthfully)

Every 6 month, since I don't drive a lot (I drive less than 5k a year). Maybe once or twice in 10 years it was 8 months between oil changes. I guess I'll take the car to a different shop this time...

    Thanks for your help!

I'm a bit concerned to see this at 60K miles on what you say is a well serviced XC
Good luck, you can always sell it to me
