I just did my rear shocks not long ago for the second time. It's really not much harder than the front. The trick is to use the jack comes with the car to push it down. You cannot just use any jack, only the Volvo's jack can get in there. If you have to use the ratcheted strap you'll need to put both sides of the rear end on jack stands; otherwise, it would take a lot of force to ratchet it down (I used this method a few years ago for my first set and learned the lesson). Good luck!

The Volvo (ZF-Sachs) Nivomats use no external power source.
They "steal" energy from the movement of the car during the ride.
To test for Nivomats you can load the cargo area with some serious weight
so that it really goes down into the suspension.
If the car is again level after a ride, it has Nivomats. If the weight is removed,
the car will stay level, the extra pressure in the shock absorbers is vented.
For more info, see the ZF website:

    Hi Willy,

Drove up to local Shock Shop who has done XC shocks before, no wonder he let me do the buying.
put his gadget on all four corners and fronts came up with E% readings FL & FR good RL & RR bad

Went to fit the just arrived 311-753 Saachs and bugger there wrong.
Appears I have the uncommon self levelling/Four-c suspension shocks. self levelling is obvious but what is four c or Novomats
Fitted are 86mm diameter tube shocks vis 45 mm for the 311-753 Saachs
Back to the postings for more info unless some kind sole can shed light on what and where they can be got?

Have emailed FCP and await their response.

And the other issue positive pressure from cam cover oil filler cap.
So need the PCV done & believe FCP have a kit

Is there a page on these abbreviated terms someone could supply this newbie thanks

    Cheers JLS

    JLS,

Have a look at these articles on IPD's site:

    http://www.ipdusa.com/techtips/10024...olvo-have-them
    http://www.ipdusa.com/techtips/10083...-volvo-have-it

They have pictures of both Nivomat and Four-C shocks, so at least you'll be able to tell at a glance what you've got on your XC.

    Good luck.

    Thanks myzomela,

Now I know what to look for its Nivomats no electricals on our XC70 but $300 each plus the wrong shocks.
Might have been better to let the agents screw me.
Might do the load test recommended in Novomat site just the same I don't like the bouncy ride I have at present.

Thanks again for your time & the other replies, much appreciated
Gradually get the hang of adding photos & abbreviation.

    Hi Canbera

First reply didn’t get posted somehow.

    Thanks
The two links did the trick & I Nivomats are fitted.(no electrical attachements)
Just rang the agents here and was quoted $1400 each from Volvo Australia.
Tried RM European Rock Auto no luck now waiting on FCP & ipd usa to get back to me.
Any other suppliers worth trying ?

    Cheers

Volvo still stocked the Nivomat for my 2004 XC90 when I bought them last year. Not cheap. If you have Nivomat, you must replace with Nivomat. The spring rates are lower for the Nivomat, so if you go with regular shocks, you need to replace the springs as well.

I would go with Volvo parts for this.
