Power steering fluid leak

My leak

I just got back from 2 weeks away, and due to fire situation in our part of the world, wife has been parking car on cement driveway.

I have 3 "stains" on driveway which may have been going innoticed in garage, largest being 10 inch in diameter, brake or ps fluid, still researching.

And lo and behold, ps fluid down, and leaking from the bottom of power steering reservoir at the non screw clamp.

Car in for new mirror motor on warranty soon, so i guess they can fix this as well.

15,000 km @ 6 mos old

I just came back from taking my car in for it's 22500 mile service and had them check my leaking ps unit. I decided to let the dealer replace the clamp. It turned out that they replaced the whole unit, reservoir, hose and clamps.

kersti: good for you, but.... it makes you think the dealership is making good on the Volvo warranty reimbursement. No matter, you're ahead with what they did.

P.S. You sure drive a lot. You and I bought our cars at same time and our car has only 12,300 miles -- and we've driven up and down the West coast a couple of times. Maybe your commute is lengthy or you've got relatives in Florida.

I'm curious, when they replaced the power steering rreservoir as a whole did they use screw type clamps or stick with the original crimp type?  I think the crimp clamp is the weak link in that power steering plumbing.

Yes, I do have about a 25mi commute each way. We have made 3 trips to mammoth, 1 to Tahoe and a trip through Idaho, Montana, Oregon following the L & C trail.

Bill, I will be going in again to fix headlight wiper on Monday and will ask about the clamps, I will also try to remember to open the hood and check if I can tell what was used.

Same problem with power steering clamp & hose(my'04)....noticed leak on my driveway...at 6200 miles...brought it in to the dealer...they fixed, replaced hose and clamp....this sounds like a real problem that everyone should "look at" on their car and have the dealer inspect. I agree with prior posts...where's the "warning" light?

Based on Low Tide's original posting I simply didn't wait for the problem to surface. When next at my Service Dept I discussed what this thread was reporting and they obliged by replacing my power steering hose C clamp with the screw type immediately. Sooooo, no leaks for me to post here.

thanks for all the information ! I will check mine before leaving for work tomorrow AM. I wish I had known this before my 7,500 mi service last Sat AM  

 Will surely get it fixed before problems arise.
Barry, a question re: PS fluid. What kind do you keep as a "spare". My husband says there is a bunch of them, so we want to be sure and get the correct one.
Kersti, hard to believe how many miles you have ! Bet you enjoyed all of them. I don't like to drive/ride in anything else any more

Here is a PS question.  How is the pump (or is it) different if you have the Speed Sensitive Steering?  I will check my hoses when I get home as well.

My advice would be to obtain the recommended PS fluid from your Volvo dealership's parts dept. I always have a spare bottle of this for my Volvos.
