Default How often does the ignition switch fail?

Now that I am in the process of getting my ignition switch replaced I am wondering how often this occurs. Should I have the same switch in my wife's 2005 S80 replaced just as a precaution. I keep our Volvos in good condition just to avoid getting stuck somewhere. I replace the batteries after so many years just to avoid finding a dead battery some morning (or evening).

Now that I have learned how to remove the housing and get to the switch I have some confidence, but still having to do this procedure again would ruin my day.

After having to replace an ignition switch on my Mercedes a few years ago, the dealer told me it was due to having extra of keys on the keychain and the extra weight and swinging wore out the switch. Not sure if this applies to Volvos but I've since made sure all my car keys are just by themselves or at most with just the remote.

    Not yet for me.

But it's too early to tell.

At least I now know how to disconnect the shift interlock so I can put the car in neutral when it needs to be towed to the dealer.

Mine went at around 100k. Just suddenly locked and wouldn't work, no warning. The tow truck driver at the time said he sees them regularly and whenever it is a Volvo he gets a call on it is frequently for this issue. Was a $600 repair and had to be re-keyed in Sweden.

No idea if that is meaningful but it is anecdotal FWIW....

Just once, then you replace it.

You disassemble the lock and remove deformed lock ring. $0 if DIY.

Ignition switch is different thing, btw.
