Hit 25.7 mpg once driving at night from MA to VA, cruising at 75. Regular mpg is 20..20.4, mostly highways.

My other Volvo, which is 2002 V70 with N/A 2.4l engine, gets 25.4 in the same driving condition, but certainly misses its horses doing overtakes.

What is more annoying is that XC70 has noticeably smaller tank, I have to fill it twice a week...

I guess my car likes the warmer temps...my last few tanks were close to 25mpg combined. Filled up today and got 24.8, last week was 24.9, week before was 24.2. Up from my normal 22 avg. Been running 0W30 syn and keeping the cruise at or slightly under 65.

you guys have a great fuel economy. Mine 212K km was always more thirsty than that. And it is getting worst weeks and weeks and no codes.... my average half city/half highway on premium fuel is now at the average of 15-16 mpg no not L/100, us mpg. New volvo spark plug, air filter, turbo/vacuum hose, tcv....nothing , I am still on my way down to 1mpg! I someone have a contact , like to get her in anonymous volvo fuelaholic therapy. I am starting to think that C4 plastic will help a bit to get some boost. My eyes get wet of joy when I hit 105us gal (4ookm) on a tank.
It was the first...would be the last....

On a relatively flat freeway (HW 5 from SF to LA) without many cars, with AC off, I was able to get 28 mpg with cruise control set at 75 mph, speed limit 70 , for more than an hour of driving. That was the best I have ever had. With AC on, I got about 26.5 mpg in the condition. What really lowers the mpg is when ran into slower traffic with many cars, big rigs and mobile homes, I needed to slow down then pick up the speed again. Going up and down the mountains would also lower the mpg. Oh, by the way, I think the direction of win has a lot to do with it as well. My average, both local and freeway, with my 04 XC70, is about 24.5 mpg, which is about 2 mpg better than the 01 I used to have. This car is best for longer trips with many people in it, I am OK with that.

Way to go! I noticed after I did a PCV for my 01, I got 2 mpg better on average. The car was a lot more responsive too. I know PCV issue is not only happens to Volvo, but I am just wondering why it was not that big of an issue for many other cars.

I recently encountered PCV issues on an 01 VW Golf 1.8T (1.8L turbo engine). The Golf's turbo engine also had 2 PCV circuits like the Volvo's turbo. One for idle, another for under boost. The VW turbo had a couple of check valves to adjust the amount of vacuum. I'm guessing turbo is probably the common denominator for source of PCV complexity.

For non turbo cars, I've only ever seen a single PCV valve between the head and the intake manifold.

    That's about right.
The second the turbo cuts in, the mileage goes WAY down which is why city driving mileage in these cars is so poor
