Default 1998 XC Timing belt tensioner

    Hi all,

I just wanted to make sure that I am putting the tensioner in the correct location. I attached a photo of the bolt for the tensioner, is this in the right place? I am having a hell of a time having enough slack to get the tensioner on. I don't want to stretch the belt if I can help it. It was much easier doing my 2001.

    Thanks for your help!

Correct bolt. The hex hole in the tensioner where hex key is used to turn it CCW to tension should be at 8 o'clock as this is the slack position.
You can move the indicator finger of the tensioner to give even more slack.
The tensioner should be on and then fit the belt around it.

put idler in first. be sure the belt is on the crank and tight on the right side. thread over the exhaust cam. and water pump. volvo direction call for turning eccentric on tensioner clockwise to 10 oclock to slacken it.

Thanks guys for your help. I actually had the setup right except that i had not cleared something below the crankshaft pulley. This was the 3rd timing belt job I did this week, all on different years, but all were slightly different. 1998, 2001, 2005 70 series models
