    sorry to see that..]
    a- find a proper replacement
b-bypass the angle gear and make it FWD
    c- fix it with welding???

I run into this thread and maybe it will help you a little. Go to the last link of the first post and somewhere towards the end there is an information that 04 uses the same collar sleeve that 98AWD and angle gear is the same too( not sure about that..http://www.v70xc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19979 In this post you will find a little information about part numbers.)

I have a question to the welding gurus: Is it possible to weld the collar sleeve and angle gear input shaft together???????
So maybe in this way we can avoid spending money on a "new" used part and just install new seals and put it in.Maybe it will be good for couple more years????? will the welding compromise the balance of the input shaft and will lead to premature bearing death???

    Thumbs up Problem solved!

    well, problem solved.

this vehicle is very rare here in israel (far far away from most of you guys).

I managed to find a wreck 03 xc70 2.4 and i took its angle gear.

the only difference between the 2.4T and 2.5T is the thickness of the driveshaft for the rear wheels,
i replaced the part in the following picture from the old one to the new.

I wouldn't weld it...it's made of a more mild steel so that it gives before the transmission output shaft or angle gear...it's a sacrificial part...welding it is like putting a penny in the fuse box...

just in case i had my digital camera with me at work.

i can see the sleeve between the transmission and the angle gear is as good as new (no visible worn teath).
the shaft of the angle gear is worn badly, it slicks on the sleeve.

    the pictures tell it all.
Errr, I see a worn splined sleeve, you can actually see the wear marks on the top of the splines they're so flat. There could be some wear on the angle gear shaft also but it doesn't look as severe as on the splined sleeve. Of course it is possible to have wear of both components, particularly if you've been driving it around with that noise for a while. Seeing as you've already purchased a replacement angle gear I suggest you also replace the splined sleeve while the angle gear is off.
