I run into this thread and maybe it will help you a little. Go to the last link of the first post and somewhere towards the end there is an information that 04 uses the same collar sleeve that 98AWD and angle gear is the same too( not sure about that..

I have a question to the welding gurus: Is it possible to weld the collar sleeve and angle gear input shaft together???????
So maybe in this way we can avoid spending money on a "new" used part and just install new seals and put it in.Maybe it will be good for couple more years????? will the welding compromise the balance of the input shaft and will lead to premature bearing death???
I wouldn't weld it...it's made of a more mild steel so that it gives before the transmission output shaft or angle gear...it's a sacrificial part...welding it is like putting a penny in the fuse box...
