Default transmission goes 'ping' after full lock

    greetings from Berkshire,England.Just got a 2000 V70 XC ,its the p2 model
( curved sides ) which I think you folks got in 2001.
Anyway,am really pleased with ,bearing in mind it is an old car with 117k miles under its belt, but it has one very curious noise. After going on full lock
ie car parks or a very tight turn into my drive, when you accelerate there is a strange ping type noise from the front of the car.
However,if you coast ( right foot off the pedal) after going on full lock
    it doesn't do it.
Am getting my friendly independant garage to put it up on the ramp next Saturday and we can have a good look around.
Have got some interesting suggestions from the guys on the forum over here
best one seems to be its the transmission bolts .
Just wondered if any of you had come across this strange noise.
Great forum by the way, loads of good inf.

    Then stop going full lock.
Probably your steering stops are worn out
    (Cheap fix)
Who knows, but have someone check out your (the car's) front end

They most certainly DO have steering stops

Where are they? I thought they were on the control arms of some V70's but not the XC. I've swapped out my control arms and I didn't see any on my 02.

We've been over the steering stops before...I think they do...from seeing them on our car...

In any case, I don't think the "ping" is a steering stop...and I don't think it's a "transmission bolt" - I think that there was a recall or TSB on axle bolts (at teh wheel hub...) that fixed this...the OP may be confusing the issue by calling them transmission bolts...but I think new axle bolts will fix the "ping"...the full-lock in the car park puts the most strain on that outer CV joint and when it straightens, you get the metallic, high-pitched "ping"...

They're part #11 in this diagram:

But my XC70 control arms don't have that part. Like you said (and has been established many times on this forum), they're only on V70 control arms.

The above picture is a V70 arm. Astro's confusing his V70 with his XC70. Vadis has the same pic for both which just means they were lazy.

thanks Astro, thats exactly what it is ,a metalic high pitched 'ping'.
When I get the car up on the ramp I will have a real good look at these bolts
    and keep you posted.

search on ping or axle bolt. there is a specific issue with axle bolts as noted by astro14. I believe the solution is actually the xc90 axle bolts which have a large rubber bushing on them that goes between the hub and axle bolt head....also a threadlocking compound is put on the axle splines and the hub is remounted. Apparently there is play where the splines meet.

Your mechanic may not be able to find it by looking but it is a well documented issue.

Was just under my 01 V70XC to check on my CV clamp leak + turbo intake leak repair, thought I look up the steering stops. Non on the control arm. My 01 V70 T5 has them.

Which brings up an obvious question, how does V70XC (at least mine) stop at max turn? Only thing left is some limiter inside the steering rack.

On Ops question, if the axle bolt had come out recently, need to get new ones to avoid axle ping. I had mine out before and had axle ping no matter how I tightened them. New bolts (I think these are stretch bolts) solved that.
