Nope, the noise is always there when accelerating, or when I downshift so there's load on the tranny.its starting to make a noise in neutral now.
And yeah, it's pretty scary. I'm scared of how my transmission could fail while I'm driving. I read on swedespeed or something that someone's bearing let go and it jammed the gears and both front wheels locked up at 55 mph

Yah... I think if I had that noise coming from my car it would be time to have a professional at least take a look at it.

I missed the M56 part initially...how did you get an MT car in North America?
Since it's not sold here...I am not sure that I would trust the dealer blindly...they likely haven't seen one before...

Ah...in which case, I retract what I said about the dealer...they've seen this combination before. That poor thing does sound awful...sounds like the bearings or gears in the trans are coming apart...did they say to just keep driving it?
With MTs - it's often the cheapest option to simply find a good used box and swap them out. Rebuilding takes time and costs labor....and in your case, there are some pieces in the MT that may be no good any more...

Didn't go to the dealer, too expensive. I'm just gonna drive it till it dies and then get a used trans. I was just hoping it could possibly be a bad cv joint or something, but I highly doubt it since the noise totally goes away in 5th gear

If you do believe that transmission is going to die, and you intend to keep the car, why not replace it now before it takes out several other expensive things when it leaves you stranded somewhere you don't want to be?
