    Another benefit of the J-cradles I hadn't realised is that the tailgate opens much further. Not entirely, but close enough. I find it very useful.

    I've had the side by side before but we went with the J crades so the boats didn't end up being wider than the vehicle. Thule has an attachment you can hook up to the front bar that slides out and holds one end of the kayak up while you place the rear in the saddle or kayak holder of your choice. I had this and it saved me a lot of heartache when loading kayaks solo on my old Jeep Grand Cherokee. Went with the Volvo for the express purpose of being able to reach the roof but the exended arm still is very helpful. It is called the outrigger.
