Did just finally vote!
Really hopeful that she moves on for a good period of time before any transmission issues .. but she is at 102,000 exactly and driving her home this afternoon.
JRL .. thank you for the reply. I guess what I was wondering was - albeit badly and not concisely - if some of the folks voting might have actually had the tranny murdered by an incompetent shop using that bolt as a fill hole? More or less just a theoretical/rhetorical query on the vote.
I purchased mine at 112,000. I had all of the shifting problems people have been talking about and had it slip out of gear once this summer. I took it to the dealership in our town and spent about 3800$ on a replacement valve body and TCM upgrade. It worked fine until today when I was driving up a mountain pass and it slipped out of gear. Now the tranny is shot and I am cursing the day that I decided to buy this car!
Can't change my vote but my '02 just went past 180K mi, original transmission (with transmission cooler mod), so make that 8. Everything still seems good.
2002 XC70 bought new with >150,000 mi, never change the fluid....after reading much nightmare cases on volvo forum.
I recently experienced my tranny got lock up between 2nd gear & 4th in freeway speed w/ very noticible shift up/down (bwetwen 2 & 4) while in sport-shift mode. Even I put it back to Auto doesn't make any difference.
The famouse 'Triangle' warning sign is on as well as Tranny service reminder msg.
The only 'fix' is after the car stopped & restart, the tranny behaves correctly in Auto-mode. I dare NOT to use sport-shift mode for the next few days.
I checked my tranny Serial #: 02BV705130, it's not among B4 issue for those 01/02 XC70.
Last night, I replaced 4 qtr of fluide with Toyota type-4 (IV). All is well this morning, also notice smoother shifting - still afraid to put it in Sport-mode :-)
p.s. I appreciate any suggestion to turn off the 'Traingle' warning sign. Thanks!
-Joe
Turning the triangle off requires VIDA...dealer can do it (and will charge for it...).
That "service transmission" message is set by either 1. operating parameters out of range or 2. fluid exceeds max temperature.
Drain and refill it again...have the dealer reset the light...then, next month, drain and refill it again.
A drain and refill gets 3.5 qts out (not quite 4...double check your level when the trans is warm, engine idling and the car on level ground). The trans holds nearly 8 total...so a drain and refil is only 50% of the fluid replaced. This is why the Gibbons method is used...that gets nearly 100% of the old fluid out.. By doing 3 drain and refills, you're getting close to 90% out...

We just bought ours with 149,000 miles on it and it had a new transmission put in it by the dealer, as it's a common issue for the XC's transmissions to fail after 100K or so. Ours is an upgrade Japanese unit and installed by the Barrier Volvo in Bellevue, WA.
I am hoping in my lifetime there will be a VIDA button on this website. The ECU will connect via Bluetooth. Like everything else it would cost $4.95 for each reset. Yearly subscription for $39.95.
2001 V70XC +204k miles/ XeMODeX/ Pirelli 12/32"/ Duracell 48/ MOBIL-3309/ Pennzoil EURO 5W-40/ Great Lakes
-01 V70XC flushed yesterday at 139k miles and it was probably the first time the original fluid was out of the transmission. 100 miles later it shifts slightly better and no flare 2-3.
Oh, btw. my transmission has a serial number starting with 00, which means that mine is an early build and not affected by the B4 servo cover problem.
2001 xc70 i never done a flush on any of my cars and dont plan to. 210k and going strong
