Hey, thanks for the post, it made me laugh (ref: Brits & the age bit).

Over here, stealers value cars by a specific bi-yearly date (as well as the usual general age, spec, mileage & condition etc.). New registrations plates are twice yearly and typically (though not always), new models are introduced September with that new plate. Hence, the age we mention. It's not a perfect system (for identifying which variant a vehicle may be) but it is a general rule of thumb as that's when manufacturers *tend* to release new revisions / versions of their vehicles.

Sorry for the lengthy explanation, just thought I'd try explain it - I'll probably be corrected by a Brit now!

I hear what you're saying about that mileage - and totally agree.

By the way - I put the car in manual mode & saw that it has a 6 speed transmission.

Do you happen to know if the Gibbons method is suitable for my 6 speed transmission and how I determine which transmission is fitted please?

Googling what a quart is, I think it was 1.13 Litres.

    Thanks very much again

Oki - but it def. went 1 thru 6.

I'll have to take a picture of the dash display when it shows "6". I'll nip out shortly

Gibbons method works with all transmissions. Key issue is being able to verify level when complete.

Some transmissions, like the 722.6 NAG in my S600, are very difficult to check/ensure fluid level (temperature has to be validated and a separate dipstick/tool used)...the AW-55 is level sensitive...but at least it has the dipstick...

JRL is right, only AW-55s were available on US XC models.

See picture (attached hopefully) - was going just about quick enough to get it into 6th...in a residential area.

Make certain that you can find the dipstick and check the fluid level on this transmission before you undertake a Gibbons flush. It's not one I've seen before...

I really think the method was first used by someone who did the prep for a colonoscopy........

6 speeds were in European diesels in 06. I guess yours is a diesel.

If you didn't know the 6 speed has no dipstick. They use a drain plug with a center screw sealing a standpipe. The standpipe extension on drain plug is place at the full level for warm fluid (50-60 C) while idling. The fill plug is at the far LH forward corner of gearbox top. It is a TX55 plug.

    Yes, it's a D5 and thanks no, I didn't know, no dip-stick

I did post up a quote from Wiki (don't think it's against forum rules) but it flashed up that it needed to be vetted by a forum Admin - so guess it's still pending. I now wonder who the manufacturer of the 6 speed is. I'm hoping it's not ZF (only because I had another well known estate vehicle with problematic torque converter not locking - just bad luck).

No longer keen on doing a flush myself without any examples of this specific transmission having been flushed successfully by someone of similar skills to that of my own - before

Aisin Warner just like the 5 speeds.
Unless you have the right tool for measuring the fluid, it's next to impossible to get it right!
