I've found that traversing steep inclines with the engine at operating temperature helps burp the system...
Aggressive cornering would too.
There are lots of cars that spec Bosch alternators, they're not Volvo specific.

Have you personally checked the fluid level and condition or are you relying on your mechanic to tell you it's okay?
I have considerably more miles behind the wheel of a true 4/WD than my XC....
That said, with 3 kids and your stated driving habits you'll find the XC much more enjoyable to drive and less costly...
Re-coning speakers is common and affordable if you didn't tear up the basket/magnet..
Boneyards are another option for a broken in factory unit...
I'd replace both the L&R if you're going to...

Once it's fixed then consider keeping or selling...
If they're not too far off an appropriate sized die could cut threads further down for you.
I would never even consider buying a Volvo with a trailer hitch....
