    Default XC70 Off Road

I just tried the XC70 off road today. What a great car. I can seriously say the Haldex system finally works. No more digging down the front wheel before the rear axel kicks in.
    Loose sand:

Notice how the rear axle spins:

Another incline, now on wet mud. The target here is not to go over the steep top, just to see how far we can go:

At the top, notice rear wheel spins:

Now for three wheels on the ground in an incline on wet mud:

    No problem:

    Water passage:

That is from the movie "Cars". I got my first kid 1.5 months ago, a son, so I thought Cars would be appropriate

    Incredibly good photos. Loved them!

The $80K question is whether your average 2001 model XC can't climb those muddy inclines too...

What I have tested it wouldn't take them. A hefty incline would give to much weight on the rear wheels so they won't engage:

    Hi Everybody
It's a long time I read the forum but this is the first message that I'm posting (well, may be 3 - 4 years ago I posted another one...).

I have a V70 MkII and a V40. I'm now waiting for a new XC70 D5 and I'll have to sell the V70 (even if I think it's the best and most confortable car I'll ever have).

I've a question about the Haldex: reading the comments here it would appear that this is a new version of the Haldex - or at least, it's working better then on the older version - while I understood that Volvo is using just the same that was used on the latest XC70 MkII (precisily, the version 3): is this the case?

On the other side I read that several companies are now integrating the newer version 4 that provides better control of the 4 wheels, rather than relying entirely on the brakes to handle traction.

Does anyone know more about this?

Does anyone have experience of running a new XC70 on the snow or have seen good reports (apart from those organized by Volvo...)?

In these great pictures we can see the behavior of the XC70 when the 2 front wheels are slipping. How does it work if two wheels on the same side are slipping?

    Thanks
    Stefano

Does the 08 have the same haldex system that i will have in the 04 i'm getting?

Saabs the only company to use their new generation XWD, When will volvo be getting that stuff. I think saabs deal with haldex was that they only got 1 year of exclusive usage of the technology

Yea thats haldex's current (4th) generation called XWD (cross wheel drive) It uses a differential to shift power from front to back electronically, and a separate ELSD (electronic limited slip differential) to shift it from the left rear, to the right rear wheels. All electronic. Better than acuras SH-AWD, and can get 85% of power to 1 rear wheel, Acuras can only get up to 70% of power to one rear wheel. Acuras does it with a dual clutch system which seems like it would wear out much faster.

It does all of this without using brakes, which means instead of getting control by reducing power and braking wheels, It gets control and traction while maintaining full power.

    http://www.haldex-xwd.com/

Its pretty cool because as a result, the turbo-x 9-3 (the only saab to have the full fledge implementation of XWD at this point (with the ELSD, an optional component, making the left -> right shift in power possible without using brakes), It can run slaloms faster than, for example, a Porsche 911 turbo.

That video is BS. The rear tires never spun at all even befor it started going up. If the AWD was working there would have been some rear wheel slip. Plus the front tires were barley moving......something is not right.
