Tires tires again

Time to replace the old Michelin Harmony tires which got me over 8-years and over 40k miles. Tread left is on the fence and some cracking dry rot on sides. Some say the Harmony are noisy.

Again looking for all-season / all-weather. Mostly paved road use. Once in a blue moon, gravel, dirt. Live in decent amount of rain, and little snow, but some ice.

How are the Michelin Defender T+H (80k mileage wear warranty). Seems this one is Not reduced performance for the XC70 versus older michelin defender?

I would consider the General Altimax RT-43. They're about done on my wife's XC, but they've been excellent. Reasonably priced, good ride, good grip, and lasted as long as anything else on this car.

In fact, I plan to buy the same tires again next month.

I've been running the Yokohama YK740s since last fall. Overall I preferred the YK580s I had before. (Both are proprietary models for Discount Tire.) The YK580's design is weighted more for performance, handling, and high speed, the YK740 for wet weather traction and tread life. In wet and snowy conditions the 740s do have considerably better grip, however the ride is harsher than with the 580 and the dry road handling less crisp - likely due to longer wearing tread compound and block-ier tread design. I found the 580's wet and snow performance to be good enough for SE Michigan, at least the equal the OE Pirelli Scorpions the car came with, but if foul weather traction is a higher priority than crisp handling then the 740s are also a very nice tire for the price.

Another thumb up for the RT43. Wife's are 4 years old with about 30K on them on the '06 XC and might make another (mild) winter.

Put them on my MIL's Hyundai too - she is very happy with them.

Good choice for the money.

I've been running the RT43's for a few years. They've been FANTASTIC. Great grip in rain and snow, and dirt roads as well. They also wear very well if you keep them rotated.

How would ya rate & compare these 3 all-season / all weather tires for a) performance b) wet, ice, c) quietness, d) durability

1. Michelin Defender T+H, the new one that is not reduced performance (without signed liability waiver) for the xc70
2. General Altimax RT-43
3. Nokian WR-63 (I recall this one popular on old threads)
4. Yokohama YK740

If ice or snow is likely, the Nokian, hands down!

The WR-G3 are excellent in the snow. As good as dedicated snow tires. They're unique in that. There aren't any all-season tires that are anywhere close to snow tire performance, except those Nokians. Hard to find in the South. Easy to find in the Northern states or the Rocky Mountain West.
