    Default Let there be Light HID

    I took some photos of the HID Xenon high-beam headlights I installed earlier.
    Job took 20mins per side - including fitting, electrical taping and testing.

    Xenon light is 9005 6000K 50w ebay job.

    Next is a set of H7 HID slimlines for the driving lights.
    p.s. a sunroof makes life really easy with stuff like this

    If you are using HIDs as high beams, how are you compensating for the relatively slow start-up of the beam versus a halogen? I pulled my low beam HIDs in preparation for my safety inspection, but those things probably took at least 30 seconds to get to full light.

    Bill, at this stage it is experimental as I know they take several seconds to warm up ~ 10 seconds to be exact, and that is not ideal.
    I have several sets of HIDs lying around and so I thought id try them in the XC.

    Use HID in you lows and fogs and you will never use your highs again.....

    at least its that way for me

    Did you get a kit with ballasts and everything? Our Subes have projector lenses, but regular halogen globes. I thought it would be fun to add HID to them, but is it a hassle?
    '04 XC70, Ice White, Taupe. Original owner (196K miles as of may21). 6 wheel bearings, broken ignition switch, broken turbo downtube flange, failed throttle body, many warped rotors, and a myriad of weird crap. Still my favorite car ever.

    At this part of the world where we live, we must have our cars periodically check'ed up every two years by TÜV, after my HID conversation , I remember guys at the TÜV check up did not let my XC pass due to a HID's NON FOCUSING ERROR caused by the HID beams.

    I could not solve the problem and I ended up replacing HID's with the stock beams and only by then I could pass the TUV check up.

    I know I could re-install HID's after the check up but I didn't , now my beams at night feel so dark compared to HIDs but I guess it's the way it's supposed to be ??

    Today I removed the lights and sold them - that was quick !
    I installed them as an exercise and test only
    I am buying a set of H7 lights for the low beam this weekend.

    In Australia we only need our car over the pits if we are naughty and get forced to by traffic cops, or if we need to register / re-register a vehicle.
    Once it has the current State registration we're fine for years to come.

    Once you have had HIDs you CANT go back to Halogen !

    Uhhh, I think I hate to tell you this; but at least in my '02 the low beams are H7 as well. Might be differences between the NA and Oz markets, but I doubt it.

    I agree about the output of the HIDs. I had 5000K in mine and they worked well, but as I may have mentioned I've pulled them in prep for my safety. Probably will put them back in after I'm done. Here the safeties are good for 2 years so its not a big deal to install/uninstall as needed.

    One thing I would suggest is to take a good look at your low beam female sockets. The heat of light operation breaks down the enviro-safe plastics after a bit. In other words, they get a bit crumbly. I bought some new sockets off E-Bay and soldered them onto the harness. Gave me about 3 inches more lead which helps in hooking up the bulbs and maneuvering them into the housings.

    Bill, our cars are the same.
    9005 / HB4 for the highs and H7 for the lows.
    As I didnt have any H7 HIDs in the garage I couldnt have a play with them.

    If i cant find a super fast acting HID ballast for the highs, i'll simply go back to halogen ..but im definately going HID for the lows

    OK,
    I just installed a new set of Philips H7 HIDs with power harness to the battery.
    They work a treat but now I am getting the dreaded "Dipped beam failure" message. I was hoping this wouldnt happen.

    Has anyone overcome this ?

    btw, Bill, now I know what you mean by the weak soft female connector housing. I had to brace mine up with electrical tape so it can hold together.
