Wanted something with low-range so that excluded the XC90. Went with a Prado in the end.
Just wanted to take the time to thank all the contributors to this site for their invaluable input. During my 5 years of XC70 ownership this site has kept me from tearing my hair out on several...
Finally got around to fixing mine.
I can confirm that this can be done by just removing the side panel of the centre console and the panel under the dash on the drivers side. Was pretty easy in...
Had intermittent indicator issues too. Removed the switch and disassembled it and cleaned the contacts -- now it works perfectly!
Try this first save yourself some $$$. It's easy to do, after the...
OK, got it sorted!
Third attempt worked.
The documentation says you should be careful to extract/insert the switch straight for the sake of the pins that line up with the socket on the...
Removed the indicator switch from steering column as I'd been having erratic indicator performance. Cleaned the contacts inside the unit and now after re-install, the car won't recognize anything...
Glad you got it sorted Cheapo.
That dealership sounds seriously incompetent...
Many thanks for the pics Tim.
Thank you for being the first to climb Everest and confirm the location!!
Just wanted to clarify -- with the dashboard out, could you see the top of the sensor plug under the loom? Or just see the...
Norski,
Could be the prop shaft rubbing on the front muffler. My car did this after having new front bushes put in. Only did it at low speed when close to full lock. It's a known issue with the XC...
Nope. Shouldn't be.
Cheapo, you can easily check if it is the icing up issue. When the problem occurs, stop the car and lift the hood. Check to see if the aircon pipe leading into the firewall is covered in ice.

Found a couple more schematics that might help. On the expanded parts view the sensor is part #15.
Hi Tim,
Embarrassed to admit it, but the sensor is still sitting on my desk waiting for me to have another go at finding where it should go...
Looking at the diagram again I suspect it's on the...
Use 'Forever Black'. See this thread for some before & after pics. It's a plastic dye and is heaps easier than sanding & painting.
A factory 5 speed Manual XC (2001) currently for sale in Australia:

Yeah, I agree. Had an Ash Gold XC with the brown bumpers before this one but someone rear-ended it and it was totaled :(
I think the blue plastic seems more prone to fading.
Lol!
Yes, have several coats on the bumpers. Need to do a 2nd & 3rd coat for the wheel arches and side mouldings.
Given that it's a dye it should last for some time. The box reckons it'll hold up after...
Some before and after pics of bumper restoration using 'Forever Black'. I feel sooooooooo much better about the car now. The faded blue bumpers were an eyesore.
Yep, agree with with both of you. Will take the car elsewhere from now on (wasn't my regular mechanic -- was a "suspension specialist").
Could also be the front muffler rubbing on the prop shaft. You'll see a rub mark on the prop shaft if this is happening. See resources section for a PDF on the issue.
Something else to check is the front muffler rubbing on the prop shaft. This is a known issue with the XC. Just look underneath and see if there's a tell-tale rub mark on the prop shaft above the...
Had all four lower control arm bushes replaced at 131,000 kilometers (originals were totally shot).
At 133,000 kilometers the front end gets seriously bad all of the sudden -- clunking, sloppy...
Just wanted to bump this one up again to see if anyone can give some pointers as to the exact location of the evaporator temperature sensor...
The diagram Art kindly provided was good but the...
