Default Open all your doors after rain?

Just doing some stuff on the car and needed to open the rear door. We've just had the heaviest rain since getting the car and quite a bit of water came out of the drain holes. I opened all the other doors and the same thing happened. Now I know that that's what the drains are for but I've never seen this quantity of water with any other vehicle. In future I'll make sure that I 'empty' the doors regularly - it could be the case that the rear doors don't get opened for some time - makes me wonder how full they could get

    Anyone else noticed this?

    regards

Does nobody else have rain? Or is my XC70 the only one with this 'feature'?

    JsR,

I live in East Anglia and yes, we do get rain here too However, I can't say that I have experienced what I would deem as excessive amonts of water coming out of the door drains on our '03 XC. Not sure what to tell you..... sorry.
    Cheers, Gary

    Talking No rain here

John, we don't get any rain in the SE, hence the hosepipe ban in force but while my car has been having a new gearbox installed I did order some rain for our garden and as the car was in the garage I don't think the rain came anywhere near it it is a shame that I did not have the car at home as it needed a good wash but alas I cannot comment on this strange phenomenon.

The car being in the garage for a new gearbox is another story, got it back once and was told by Volvo the 'new' gearbox needed another new gearbox as there was a fault in it and would not accept the software but that is to be concluded another day, and as for getting the car back? well ......it's not good

Thanks guys - I'm sure it must be a design 'feature' as it's on all four doors, and it's not just been a one-off occurrence - I've seen it four times now - I find it odd...

Sorry to hear about the gearbox Cameron - I guess you're having to use one of your other beasties?

We do get heavy rains here from time to time, but I have never noticed what you are describing.

    Sorry.

Can't really say what is happening with yours, but we get a LOT of rain here.... usually all at one time, and my car has sat for up to a week without moving, and I've never seen any water drain out of door drains upon opening the doors following the storms.

I would just add this to your "ask the dealer about it at the next service" to make sure you didn't get a car with faulty seals or somesuch... although I can't imagine how that could happen with all four doors

    Good luck!

Spoke to the dealer about it yesterday and they think it may be to do with water lying on top of the honeycomb 'thingy' inside the doors. This 'thingy' is to allow a controlled crushing of the doors on impact and runs lengthwise along the the door. They said that they'd had previous reports of the water phenomenom but it was only when talking to me that the service manager (who's good) thought about this internal structure. They'll look at it further at the initial three month service. So I'll report back (if my memory serves me well enough!).

BTW, does anyone know what the "Run-off profile and bracket" is? It's some assembly inside the door that I noticed when looking at the drawings.

Well, that seems reasonable - until one wonders hod did it get there in the first place??

You'd notice if there weren't any seals 'twixt the glass and the door frame - either the horizontal rubber seal at the base of the aperture, or the seals on the other three sides; 'cos the windows would rattle something 'orrible!

Stumps me a bit. Happen - are there any bungs (not the football variety ) missing in the door body which would allow water ingress from around the rubber door seals?

    Would love to know.

Can't see anything obvious which would allow such a common largish ingress of water. My only thoughts are that the vertical external 'seals' around the window look to be some sort of velour type material (they feel soft) which could be excessively permeable, unlike the rubber horizontal portion.

The other thing is that even if the water is lying on a structure at a higher level than the base of the door I don't know why, when I open a door (even very slowly), it drains out of one hole first then the other. In other words the water's not just being flung off the internal structure, and I would expect it to flow off the internal structure in one direction OR the other OR stay where it is!

    We'll see
