I have full confidence in my XC, even knowing about the problematic ETM. I have driven this car far enough to know that any car can quit and mine has not stranded me yet Having survived serious accidents in my previous Volvos, I tend to be more forgiving of their mechanical and electric shortcomings.

That's cool, I really like mine, but its like every week there's a new problem, but I really like mine and I already put a lot of money into it and its what I was looking for in a car anyways so I'll stick with it for now unless I can get a great deal on a newer XC, Mine is a 2000 with 147k on it

I just dread when something goes wrong because it is just an excuse for the stealer to sting me for wads of MY cash. Nothing simple about owning a Volvo.
It's a good ride but somethings I think it is taking me for an even bigger ride, that said, I still have it and will probably buy another one, even though it would bring a divorce case between the wife and me. (BTW, in case you didn't gather, she hates them)
I only get nervous when I come on here and read about everyone elses troubles.
I've been trouble free for the 6 months we've owned our 50k mile XC.
I let a '00 XC go 3 years ago because I didn't trust it, so I voted "get rid of it." That was before the ETM problem surfaced. Sometimes I wonder what happened to it.

A valve in the #3 cylinder burned and broke at 55k miles.Originally Posted by Tyrant11429

Not reliable at all; since 48,000 miles, when we bought, we've made about 25 visits to our local Volvo retailer. The cost up to now: $8000. Yep, that's right, 8 grand in three years. This is not a dealer problem as the parts that needed replacing needed replacing. Heater core, radiator, alternator, iginition coil, various suspension components, antenna ring (ETM?) and drive shaft to just name a few. I've owned american made 4x4 trucks that have been beat on that didn't even come close in number to the number of repairs needed for our 1999 XC. At the moment, we are waiting to hear back from Volvo on what can be done.
Volvo's statement of "the average life of their product is 18.5 years" is apocryphal.
Oh, did I mention the check engine light is on, along with the ABS/Tracs light?
Oh, did I mention that my wife and infant son were stranded on the highway because the alternator died at 55,000 miles?
Oh, did I mention that my wife is not comfortable driving the car now since she's been informed of the ETM problem?
Oh, did I mention that Volvo OEM replacement parts only carry a one year warranty? I can buy a part at Napa, install it myself and get a 5 year or lifetime warrany. How can a claim of reliability be made when this fact is taken into consideration?
Now, there are a number of reasons why we like the car, don't get me wrong. What we need now is some faith restoration from Vovlo, after all, they made the car.
Needless to say, I'm angry and equally disappointed.
