    Default Upgrade of D5 163 to 185?

Does anyone know whether it is possible to upgrade the 163bhp D5 engine to the spec of the 185bhp version now launched, and also whether it is Volvo approved so that the warranty is not affected?

In theory it should be a simple ECU/Mapping change, or is this too simplistic?

What would be great would be a plug in, Volvo approved, upgrade - only a bit more reliable than Windows!

I've just taken delivery of a new D5 185 and have to say the difference is quite something. With regards to upgrading a 163 to 185 I really do not know although a company do offer an upgrade of your engine. See link:

    http://www.volvotuninguk.com/

However the cost is not cheap as they quoted me £590 to upgrade my 185hp to 220hp with an increase of fuel economy of around 10% which I did not think warranted the cost. They did say that it was a software upgrade and that it was not traceable for warranty issues etc.

    Hope this helps.

I have the 185 hp and the difference from the former D5 it's not represented just by the hp. the engine has been infact completely reviewed to meet the euro 4 (rumors saying also the future euro 5) requirements and in the meantime getting more power and torque.
it's at the end a new engine with different specs from the former D5.
another thing is if you want to chip your 163 hp, possible but not sure about the warranty, you can ask to your official dealer. i heard (but not personally verfied) in italy there are some offering an official chipping not affecting the warranty.

My sources of information says that 163hp and 185hp versions are mechanically the same , differences are in the ECU which is easy to upgrade http://www.bsrab.se/products/n317/t691/. In Sweden, BSR software is approved by Volvo and doesn't affect warranty. I'm using their 252hp software in my 2,4T and it has been great.

I got this from a specialized magazine:
The technical improvements on the new D5 are mainly due to 3 factors:
    - a new turbo: now liquid cooled, granting in this way a short period of cooling after the engine has been stopped. It has a different internal design with curved wings to increase efficiency and consequently power.
    - an improved injection system: the new system has seven instead of five spring holes and with a third phase of injection added to the former pre-injection and injection. The post injection phase has the function to better burn the fuel and reduce emissions.
    - redesigned inside air fluxes
So the external structure it’s the same but as I said it’s not just chipping. Sorry for the rough translation but technical terms are quite difficult for me.

just forgetting one thing, i would not chip the car without having before installed sway bars and improved the brakes.
i think Pico is doing a wonderful job on his car, you can take a look on the thread "too much body roll"

The "second generation" D5 is mechanically quite different from the previous one. The hp increase from 163 to 185 hp comes from real things like improved air inlet and redesigned turbo shape, and not from dirty tricks with the combustions parameters. They also added a particle filter and a few fancy things like a water cooling for the turbo (which you can hear running for a few minutes after shutting the engine)

On the other hand, the difference between the "downgraded" second generation D5 (with 163hp again) and the "full" version (with 185hp) is entirely electronic.

Of course, you can take a first generation D5 and chip it to 185hp (or 200 if you want). But it won't make it a second generation D5 (which is a *much* cleaner engine, if you care about that kind of difference)

Any idea where to get this "reversal" done (other than at the dealers) ?

The Dutch company RICA would do it (and add a few more hp if you want). But be aware of warranty / insurance / legal issues...

Griso4R - don't apologise for your english - most english speakers wouldn't even attempt to post on a non-english forum. Carry on the good work
