Same Problem - Solved
Mine had the same problem. Fortunately, I was (am) still on warranty and Volvo changed the signal stalk. Problem's gone. Turns out something was broken in the old stalk and had to be replaced.
Not sure about rest of the Volvo models but the XC signal stalk's return switch lever (the lever that returns your signal to neutral after turning) is too close to the "straight" position of the steering wheel. You can always feel something catching when holding the stalk to signal a lane change (without locking or pushing it all the way).
