    Exclamation MY05 Electrical Failure

    Hi,

I share my experience with you even if no one actually ever replied to one of my posts.

During my summer holidays in Portugal, my XC70 literally DIED!
    (whatever electric/electronic stopped working: transm.-lights-audio-airco-etc.)

It took 1 full week of service and THE WHOLE CAR'S INTERIOR REMOVED to
test all cables interconnecting all different modules to discover what is the first (now) documented factory defective assembly of this kind.
(The used the new VIDA system and Volvo KBase hadn't a clue about my XC
    problem)

Basically 2 wires (green/white) out of many located behind the rightmost side of the driver's dash (in-line with the light switch); have been pinched by a dash bolt and eventually got shorted because of rattles/high temp excursions.
This killed communications between each and every module in the car.

According to the Portuguese Technical Chief of the Volvo facility, this problem might occur on other veichles produced in that period.

My car is a June MY2005 (should be one of the last); incident happened in August 2005, so before that date is not documented.

Hope it might a useful info.

    Ciao,

    /Mario

    Default MY05 Electrical Failure

Ditto my thanks in terms of keeping us posted. This board has been a very valuable technical resource for many of us.

I see that you have a length but descriptive title to this posting. I have nominated the above additional title which also show up in future search threads. We tend to use few words when doing a search so this may get the message across more easily.

In any case, thanks for sharing and still having faith in the car.

    John

I received mine from the factory at end of May, so I believe its manufactured around April. Hope I don't run into any surprises on the road!!

    Thanks for sharing.

    Hi John,

    thank you for your post.

    Yes... I know it. I have some difficulties in being short and effective;
you know Italian language is good for Operas and blablabla it takes you
tons of words to say something that requires 3 in proper english.. ;-)

Regarding faith in my car and Volvo in general, I must say that it dropped
below 0 Kelvin... Actually I asked the dealer how much it would cost me to
giv it back and buy a new MY2006.
(in Italy and Europe in general you can't return items to shops even the same day you bought ' em; it's almost impossible that you can have a
    car replaced...)

    Ciao,

    /Mario

    Ciao littlewaywelt,

actually I should take a look at the car's papers, but...

    Right now I can't! Why?

I'm going around with a courtesy V50, since my XC is in for an airco
    fix... :-/

After 3/4 hrs of shutdown, if you turn it on air smells like a bunch of
gorillas did piss in the vents... bleargh!

I guess this must be what Volvo brands as "Air Quality System" or "Prem'Air"
    radiator... doh!

anyway I did the factory order in mid April and got it delivered in the very end of may...

    Ciao

as I read your post, I can share a part of your problems. My XC70 has been delivered in March '05, and is now for 2 weeks at volvo's dealer.(in Belgium)
The 4C system doesn't work any more, an they can't find anything.
They will probably have to change the whole suspension....
(the car has already been fixed tice!)

    Dear Ralf,

I feel like we're some sort of brother in arms who share
some sort of (stupid compared to real matters) worries...

but... I #fckng# invested big bucks on that car and was willing
to sell my TT roadster as it gave me lots of problems.
Now I got the Volvo, problems are even more and I can't avoid
thinking that it COSTS MORE and it recognized as a LUXURY veichle...

What the hell are they thinking??? I work in the IT and if you
are willing to beta-test or even alpha-test a software, you're
    warned! please go ahead.
Here it seems to me that cars are afflicted by zillions more flaws
than IE or other buggy software, but they sell them as perfect
    pieces of mancraft...

With that street price I expect really a lot!

Did I mention that upon delivery the driver electric seat stopped
working after 30mins I went driving the XC????

The more I write about this the more I feel an idiot because I'd
like to give it back for a new SAME one :-|

These expensive toys should be backed with lots of rights on the
customer's side, the ones like you can impose should your new
cell phone goes dead after 2 days from the purchase...
you give it back and they give you a new one!

    doh! bah! mah! bleargh! sgrunt!

BTW, have you read my post on the 4C?
Is your XC somewhat lower on the back compared to non 4C veichles?

    cheers,

    /Mario
