Default USB port install on console?

On the center console there are a couple of accessory switches, and one blank plate. Has anyone else tried installing a USB socket for power into this location?

This is a newly acquired 2007 XC70 that does have the factory audio AUX connection in the console. I plan to install a Bluetooth GROM unit, but NOT the GROM USB connection. I just want to install a power port so that I can get away from using the adapter in the lighter socket.

While Volvo clearly intended to leave room for other switches there, you will find it's rather tight between the faceplate and the socket for those switches in the CCM. I just looked at this - pulled the CCM, took it apart (fan first, then the rest) and it is really tight. The USB socket that I have will not fit in there, and you're aiming your drill bit right at the PCB for the CCM. I plan to put the USB socket next to the radio.

I think the more popular choice of location is to remove the lighter socket and replace it with USB power using something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07MKFVW9F/

I put mine in the cubby beside the radio.
