Default Tire Recommendation Needed - 215/65R16 - Follow-up with Decision Made

My previous thread disappeared, and I have now bought new tires, so I though I'd post to share what I bought, in case others are looking.

I was shopping for tires for my 2007 XC70. I've been using Nokian WRG tires for many years, most recently the WRG3 SUV.

I was unhappy to discover that the latest Nokian WRG5 tires don?t come in 215/65R16, so I looked for alternatives.

I?m in the Chicago area and would like an all-season/weather tire that has decent cold/snow capabilities, with good wet and dry handling.

Astro14 had suggested that I might find some remaining stock of WRG4 tires, and I was searching for that with poor results. However, while searching, I came across postings in other car forums in which people indicated that when Nokian revised the WRG4 to the WRG5, and discontinued the WRG4, they started producing the "Nordman Solstice 4" using the same mold as had been used for the WRG4. Those postings claimed that the Nordman Solstice 4 is the same as the WRG4. It certainly has the same tread pattern, as far as I can tell. The specs list the tire as having a 102H XL load/speed rating.

I bought a set via Amazon and am happy with the purchase. I think if I were to need to buy them again, I might try having my installer order them, just to make things easier.

Looking forward to see how they perform this winter.

Good to know! Still have the WR G4 on the XC, but appreciate you circling back on what you found.

I threw away my dedicated winter tires set when I spent one Boston winter with Vredestein Quatracs. They were worse on unplowed roads than regular winter tires were, but not too much. I was never stuck. Then we switched wife's Volvo to Quatrac 5 and she was very happy with them. More grippy, much more quiet than the factory Michelins she had previously. I've got another set of Vredesteins for my XC70 - the Pinza AT in 29" size, and they are brilliant again. Not as good in mud and deep snow as KO2 and similar real AT tires, but perfect for suburbs.

Thank you for the feedback - I'm good for now, but your experience certainly will have me looking at the Vredesteins!

    Cheers,

I'm very pleased with Micheline Cross Climate II. Perfect for Upstate NY and as all-season tires.
