Modern fuel injected cars/engines you do not need to touch the throttle/gas pedal.
All you should need to do is turn the key to crank the engine.
I can’t speak to exactly the cause, but depending how many miles on your car you may want to consider cleaning the throttle body and the MAF sensor if you are handy. If you are not handy then find a good independent shop.

I would say take the opportunity to check the induction side of engine.
* When was fuel filter changed?
* Dito air filter.
* Is the airbox sealed and the pipe to the exhaust side connecting to turbo sealed and are vacuum hoses good
* When was the turbo control valve replaced - they get tired and don't operate swiftly. Ignition off does the valve chatter for 60 seconds +
* remove the timing belt/sparking plug/coil pack covers - mark the coils 1 - 5 and carfully removing each one, inspect cracks and burn marks should be considered a possible sign of pending failure. An Ohm check with a multi meter will show if it is still in tollerance and variation from the other four should pinpoint the failed component But the best indicator of this is the sparking plug condition. Does the colour indicate good ignition? Is it wet, fouled and carbonised? Does it smell of gasoline?
Next I would inspect the wire harness to the plugs for continuity, including the grounds (three). Inspect the VVT solinoid and then the fuel rail, high pressure sensor and the fuel injectors (puchase ten new 'o' rings for them and have some silicon grease for reinstallation.
Have you cleared the codes with Vida? Then try starting the engine. Missing? remove the injector harness plug and listen for a change. There is more to do if you are unlucky. MAF sensor; plenum changer sensor; coolant sensor and thermostat (coolant too while you are at it) these xc s repay thorough maintenance.

Following up, seems now fixed, no need to press gas pedal - just turn key.
Culprit appeared to be throttle body, now replaced
