    Default Door Key Cylinder

Two winters ago, the door key cylinder froze. At the moment, my option was heating up the inside of the cylinder to be able to turn the key. I used an old smaller key, from a non exiting car, heat it up and plunged it inside the cylinder. The heat melted the ice. I was able to unlock the door with its (Volvo) key. I later started using the key fob. Much later, I tried to use the key, the cylinder will not turn; till now.

I just removed the key system and the cylinder, which seems to have some crud on the outside. Got them all cleaned up.

If I pull out the guts of the cylinder, will I able to put them back, or is that only for the locksmiths?

    Thanks

I think I would try a good penetrating oil, like Kroil, and let it soak.

DONT use WD-40. It’s garbage and turns to gum in months.

If you used WD-40 previously, then that’s the problem…try mineral spirits to dissolve that crap…

I took the cylinder out this yesterday. Today I opened it. Two pins will not go in. I removed them and realized the two pin's springs are bent.
Must have been the hot little key I had inserted must have weakened the springs. Since I got the car, that lock has always given me issues, which was why I always used the fob.

I have decided to get a new locking system for the door and have the Key people, key it for me.
VIDA - In the parts catalog, I could not really identify which vehicle is mine.
FCPEuro - Which is where I buy my Volvo parts. However, after selecting my vehicle's trim, it reverts back to just "V70". They had told me it remembers my selection input.
A1Auto - In selecting a vehicle's trim, "XC" is not an option.
Definitely, there are lots of differences between the V70 and the V70XC. I have gotten the parts for the V70, to be returned.

For my 2001 XC, I am finding "Door Lock Cylinder (Left). LOCK KIT / Part Number: 31253441"
On another Volvo dealer, I found "Lock Cylinder - Volvo Part Number: 30753440"

Using the 30753440, I went back to VIDA catalog and found something. I says:
"Lock kits V70, V70XC, XC70,-2003, When ordering separate keys or keys with a lock kit an SW must also be ordered."
What it "SW" in the VIDA catalog note?
I need to get a cylinder and get it done to work with the key I already have that starts the car also.

I will be on line trying to find the right one.
Hope you all had a good enough 4th.
    Cheers

Wow - I've never taken a lock cylinder apart on a car. House door? Yes. But not a car.

So, they're internally similar and you can get parts? Then, like a Schlage or other home lock, I would think you can replace the springs and lock parts...but I've never done it.

I would talk to your local dealer. It may be possible to order a lock cylinder already coded to your key, and save the difficult part of individual springs, etc...

Order a keyed lock from your dealer, using your VIN. Volvo will make one and send it to your dealer in about 3 days. That lock part # fits many cars in your year range, all the s60/v70/s80/xc70s etc. It MIGHT be a 9170242 that you need. Check the parts catalog page and your ordering dealer to make sure - good thing if the dealer makes the determination of the correct part number and orders the part then it does not work - you can return it.

SW - is needed to program your car to accept a different or new key (using a VIDA subscription) - if you were adding a key or changing all or just the steering column lock to a new combination - You will see SW on other pages where a software download is needed to make a NEW module work - CEM, ECU, REM, CCM, etc.

Thanks all for the information. Anytime I hear the word "dealer", it give me chills. With them, it will be lots of $.
They seem to be closed for the 4th, will call them tomorrow. I will keep you all updated.

Wondering, if the dealer in town would ask for my VIN to code the key, then, I should be able to work with a dealer or parts store outside Alaska, since they are always much cheaper.

    Cheers

You should be able to order from any dealer willing to ship it to you - these guys want $144 for that part number. (again - i'm not sure that's the correct part number) You would give your VIN number to the person you are ordering it from. That and a credit card number.

The online parts stores I called don't have the door lock cylinder.
Volvo Cars Annapolis will not sell it online for security reason; he said I have to go to my local dealer and show proof of car ownership. The dealer in town is $297 (coded from Germany). Just wondering if I live in a town without a Volvo dealer?

Yes I just talked to my local dealer and showing proof of ownership is a Volvo Rule - The parts guy has to send that to Volvo with the order. When I had my shop they did not require that from me because they knew me and I purchased $$$$ in parts from them every month. List price he quoted me was ~$220 for that part number.
