Default New to the group - 2006 XC70

Hello all..I am a new 06 Willow Green XC70 owner also a new 2021 V60CC owner. It started with my wife and I trading the Subaru Forrester in on the V60 CC which we love, btw, then I quickly decided that the V600CC was too nice for the two dogs. I went about looking for another Volvo wagon for taking the dogs to the park etc. I found the 06 on the local CL sitting at 150K, good service records, and a very clean interior. The owners had been working with a local Volvo shop here in Charlotte call The Swedish Connection. Going in eyes opened after a test drive I knew the car needed shocks, struts and had a vibration at speed. I got it for a great price and after replacing the driveshaft, motor mounts, struts, and shocks, brake fluid flush, the car is awesome. I also replaced the wheels and tires. The driveshaft was half off at IPD and the mechanic says it was an original that had been completely refurbished by someone who knew what they were doing. Running 10w-30 Mobil1 high milage for the warm weather that is already upon us. Hours of elbow grease cleaning up the exterior, and working on the original paint, headlights, and trim. Also added a dog barrier, that I found on ebay cheap, but of course, it needed struts too, but that was an easy fix.

I asked the mechanic/owner of The Swedish Connection about a trans flush and PCV system, and he advised against both. On trans he said to wait and see if there are any issues in warmer weather before doing anything to it. On the PCV he just said he really doesn't see a need at this point and in his experience does not see a lot of PCV issues, with 5 CYL. Thoughts?

    thanks..

I have an '04 at 400,000 kilometers (=250,000 miles) and an '06 with 200,000 kilometers (=125,000 miles). Both are doing fine despite our tough Canadian weather (-20F overnight happens regularly).

I tend to do the tranny oil change at around the 125,000 mile level and think you are ranging at the top end of the spectrum at this point. Most will disagree with me, but I'm comfortable going above 125,000 miles for the tranny oil change as it is pricy. A more important issue is whether your timing belt has been changed. If it breaks, your engine will likely be destroyed! If it has not been done, put your money into that as a first step.

    Welcome aboard in any case!

    I’ll disagree with your mechanic.

I’ve got three of these cars. All three needed the PCV system, at varying mileage, but they needed it. Part of the problem was Volvo dealers using the wrong oil. Even owners using good quality oil have needed that service. Do yours before you blow out a cam seal and cost real money.

The timing belt should be your first priority, but if you blow out a cam seal (as I did on the XC, despite using ACEA A3/B4 synthetic oil at 7,500 mile intervals) from a failed PCV system, you’ll need a new timing belt because the oil will ruin the belt.

Change the transmission fluid. It’s easy. It’s DIY and it’s not very expensive. You’re going to buy 14 quarts of fluid (Toyota T-IV is the same fluid as Volvo for 1/4 the price. Buy that) and the IPD kit which has good instructions. It’s pricey only if Volvo fluid is used, and there is no reason to pay four times the price for the same fluid. You’re paying for a label, nothing more, despite all the internet hogwash out there. Aisin (a Toyota Division) built the transmission. Toyota fluid is what goes in it.

    Oil analysis done. Same fluid.

IPD kit here, get to know IPD. Great support for your Volvo.

125,000 is a very long time for fluid. I change mine every 30,000 miles. Volvo actually recommends 52,500 miles when in “severe service such as taxi or police”. With 268,000 miles on an original 2002 transmission, which were known to fail early, my car shifts perfectly and runs great. I credit fluid changes, along with the oil cooler and filter.

Details on my filter and cooler set up, which I’ve done on all three cars and strongly recommend, can be found in this thread, which talks about the transmission fluid flush.

Yes, Timing belt has been done already. I've got to know IPD and FCS quite well as I purchased the parts before taking it to the mechanic.

Thanks for the tip on the trans fluid that is the way to go for sure to save a lot on the fluid.

Welcome. Do we really need a vehicle dedicated to take the dog to the dog park? What is the world coming to? LOL I mean, I'm all about task-specific cars. I've got my AWD off-roader/ski trip vehicle (the XC70), my commuter (the TDI Jetta wagon, 395K miles, 45 mpg), and the sports car (1978 911), but I don't yet have the take-the-dog-to-the-dog-park vehicle. Take Astro14's advice and change your ATF. Dirty ATF in these transmissions leads to wear in the valve body valves and nothing but trouble thereafter.

Good to see timing belt was brought up. You never know if the poster is aware or not. I have a coworker who has an S60 (same engine as XC70). He was at 128,000 miles, and I advised him to change his timing belt. He's not a car person and had no idea this was something that needed to be done.

Volvo wagons have two principal uses:

    1. Taking dogs to the dog park

    2. Displaying college stickers
